Little Rx3 history and clarification. in 1977 and 78 all US model Rx3s (coupe only no wagons or sedans were made) were called Rx3-SP. Again all were Rx3-SP. In addition to the base car or option set it was built with, you could purchase a dealer installed "appearance package" this was applied usually at the port of entry, but could have been applied at the dealership as well. The special package was only supposed to be applied to certain colored manual transmission cars however a dealer could have applied the package to any color/options combo. This is the reason there have been a couple of green cars with stripes and a couple of automatics as well.
The appearance package consisted of the front air dam, rear spoiler, full body graphics package, side window louvers, and rear window louvers. It is thought that the appearance package was developed to provide useable factory aero parts for the SCCA/IMSA racing community.
Hope this answers your question.
