Does your vintage Mazda Smell funny, here is an easy "cheap" solution

Hello all,

I thought I would pass this on to you guys, and girls.

Don't laugh. It works, I tried it. Tired leaving the windows hoping it will air out, that will never work. To aid in the removal of old car smell do the following. Buy a box of tea bags, any regular non flavoured kind like Earl Grey etc... put them in a small container loose so the breath and leave them in your car with all the windows closed for a few days-a week is better. Most of the smell should be gone. Then change the bags and leave a new bunch under in the contaiiner under the passenger seat. It will maintian the smell removal process. It does work. Somehow they soak up the bad smells. The guy who evaluates my cars for me taught me that trick and it worked for my 74 Alfa GTV. He does not know why or how but it works better than any product you can buy on a shelf.

Regards

Max G

Hello,

I failed to mention, use more than one bag. Like half a box (15 to 20) One of those small yellow Twanings boxes is what I used.

Have heard this before but with coffee, not tea. My guess is that it just leaves a stronger odor that covers the old odor up. Haven't tried it, though.

Its not acting like an air freshner to mask the old smells

Hello,

It does not add another sent to over power the current smell. Coffee masks smells and thats why it used to be used to imprt drugs (at least in the movies). The tea leaves absorb smells and thats why it removes them not masks them. Nature has its way.

I used probably 10 or so teabags. Hope decaff is ok. I just scattered them inside the car. Might have been better to hang up and let air get to both sides.
I'll post back in a few days with the results. I've tried febreeze and baking soda, no help, so this is sure worth a try.

Since you are trying to absorb the smell, wouldn't baking powder work better?

I thought that is what that stuff is for. At least in the commercials they used to show a house wife putting a box in the refrigerator right next to the smelly fish.

Hello,

Put them in a small plastic food container and leave the top opened leaving them under the passenger seat. It wont work over night. I left it in my Alfa for weeks and then changed them for fresh ones every so often. It has really cleared up the smell. Noow the smell in y care war from age, not due to a spill of fish oil or something that may still be present.

It worked form me.

Regards

Why are people complaining about the smell of old fabric when our engine stinks.

Which one would you choose: standing next to a smoker OR behind a fumy rotary engine

Behind a rotary engine, obviously. Oil smoke > cigarette smoke! And it's better for you!

I love the GTV but truth is in never drive it. You can't do that to an Alfa. I am the second owner and have the entire hitory and original title. These arent the bet picture of the car again before cleaning it up. 75000 original miles and resprayed once. Never rusted either.

But it may have just been sold. Guy is coming up from NY first week of March to give me a deposit.

Hello

On the front cover of GRM, humm, maybe I should wait a bit before selling. I have noticed the value of these GTV's jump in the past 5 years to almost double what someone used to be able to pick one up for. Perhaps I am jumping the gun in selling. I wish my 76 vette sold instead but something has to go and soon, I just have teh space, time, or extra cash to run all these.

The 10 teabags have been in the old celica for about a week and a half undisturbed. Checked it yesterday, smells seem to be at least 1/2 gone. I'll buy some cheapo tea and throw the whole thing in there and try again.
So far, so good, though. I believe this just might work.

Maybe it's just me, but I kinda like how my old mazda smells. My wife claims it gives her asthma though.

Hello,

I am glad to see its working for you. I leave a small container in my cars now under the seat at all times. What I like about it is that is is not masking any smells by adding another sent through the use of air freshners. This could also add lots of value to a car when selling at time of the initial to inspection of a potential buyer.

Keep us posted. Again this tip came from a proffessional evaluator of anique cars that has been in teh business for over 20 years. Gald I got the tip.

regards
