Candidates for rotary swaps.

I like the rotary in a chevette thread and was wondering what other good models would be good for a rotary transplant. I was thinking a first gen rear drive 323, or a Mazda truck something made after they stopped putting rotary engines at the factory. Datsun 510s are cool, what about older Datsun, and Toyota trucks? I heard of someone putting one in a Chevy S-10, I think an old Isuzu truck (or Chevy LUV) would work too. An Isuzu Impulse, Mitsubishi Starion, or Datsun z (240,260, or 280)?

umm older 70's toyotas, the old celicas, corollas and coronas. all have similar looks like the RXs. even AE86s that would be sweet cause they make a shitload of suspension and other perf parts for them. lates matt22

Basically if i were gonna put a rotary in a non mazda car i would look into that cars aftermarket parts so i could upgrade everything else. I wouldnt put a rotary in a car that couldn't be upgraded. ya know what i mean. lates matt22 oh 12a into a VW Baja BUG. theres an idea.

Funny you should mention the Isuzu Impulse, that's my project, no hints yet though.

yeah a impulse would be the ****, my brother has one stock and it goes like a bat outta hell already. I never even thought the rotary would be cool in there and it looks like alot of space to work with. It also has the awesome suspension(by lotus) and braking. I would try to keep it mazda also, the miata would be very nice. I just happen to like the idea of it in a street bug, or a baja like mine

shes almost done, just got all my electrical gauges, sensors are as follows
oil low light, oil temp, oil pressure, engine water temp, return water temp, tach, voltage, amperage for lights only, boost gauge(for future reference, haha), alt charge light, and about 10-15 toggle switches, A/F gauge coming soon.

Braking in these is everything, the rear is old bus drums(very large) and ghia disk in the front(hopefully widened 6 in soon, just need adjusters). This car should weigh less than 2000lbs, I can already pick the front end up a few inches off the ground.

Is the oil cooler's permanent position? If it is, then the oil may overheat due to insufficient oil circulation. The pressure may not be strong enough to push the oil upwards. just my $0.02.

I am going to have a temp gauge hooked right on the line from the cooler. Not enough pressure? What does your oil pressure gauge say when its running, around 40psi minimum? At a mininum of 40psi I would say it has enough pressure, now cooling might be a different story but a small fan with a shroud should cover that. Plus there is alot of air moving from under the car into that area. My oil pressure switch will be under the filter base, in one of the factory locations.

Having the OC mounted on a vertical position, the oil "may" take the shortest route which is the by-pass hole. (if you remove the t-stat, you will see what I am referring to. Whereas, on a horizontal position, the oil comes in from the top fitting, through the channels, and out through the lower hose.

Yeah, I was thinking classic BMW 2002, or older 318. Maybe a Datsun 1800, as far as trucks go I've heard of Suzuki Samauris with them but is there enough torque for 4 X 4 use? Another thing I agree about a RWD car but I have heard of people using rotaries in Minis? Is there a way to hook a rotary transverse? If so could one be put in an MR2, Fiero, or Fiat X19? One more thing, if they can put a chevy small block in a Porsche 914, I'd like to see someone use a rotory.

I've seen a picture of a 914 with a rotary. Appearently you can use one of the commonly available VW adaptors. Those little cars are heavy for their size though.

What about a Kharman Ghia? I would basically be the same as a VW bug swap wouldn't it? Looking to do my first import project and I want to do the rotory thing just something different. Wanted to use a first gen rear drive 323, but can't find much info on those cars.

Starion = bad

Sorry I have always loved that car and would be a shame to ruin it.

Opel = good

Opels's are sweet.

My car is a 1971 Datsun 1200 weighs 1664 lbs from the factory. I'd like to get it weighed once I'm finished with it. I'm trying to keep under 2000 lbs with me in it.

Don't forget the various MG products; MGB, Midget. Had an old friend that did an MGB about 20 yrs ago. Street port etc. It was as fast as the V8 conversion that used to be offered but it still handled great. The 'B' is a lot easier, a lot more room.

Personally, I'm all for the british Mini. Great power to weight. Theres a suzuki Samurai here with a 13b J-port and a DX corolla limo. The rotary Van is huge in New Zealand too. Best one i have seen would be a toyota Altezza with a 20b Turbo!
