CT B-13 1959 Bugeye Sprite

Hey all, I'm currently jamming a B-13 into a 1959 Austin Healy Bugeyed Sprite. I joined this forum to get some help and insight as I work this build. The 1st thing I've noticed while scanning the threads was the various types of motor there are, (S4, S5, FC etc) Can anyone explain who I can tell which type I have. I was told it can from a 1987 RX-7. Thanks in advance and you can see more pics in my profile.

the water pump is series 4( 1986-1988 ) and so is the middle houseing, it has the EGR valve on it. so chances are it's from a 86-88. Running a CARB? or trying to go EFI? Good luck with your project, looks like it would be quick too! Oh yeah, its 13b, not B-13, thats a honda acronym.

Roger That on the 13B. I'd like to run a carb if possible. Sounds easier to me, what do you think and are there conversion kits available?

If you're gonna do a carb, do a Weber-style sidedraft (Weber DCOE, Dellorto DHLA, OER, etc.). Most 4-barrels have severe problems on rotaries, and you get extra hood clearance with a sidedraft as opposed to a downdraft.

Thanks White Rice. I'll go the e-bay/craigs list roue for sure thanks. Is any type of performance manual that will help me complete the conversion from FI to a carb? Thanks agains.

You dont need a manual, its a simple conversion on NON turbo 13b's. Just replace your efi throttlebody and manifold etc with your new carby and inlet manifold ensuring any necessary vacuum line's are accomodated for in your new manifold. (you may need to drill and tap additional inlet depending on carby/manifold choice. Remember space may dictate choice.
Replace your fuel pump with a carby fuel pump and regulator/filter. (Holley red will do)
Then re-wire your distributor/ignition wiring to make it independant from your now redundant engine management cpu.
Turn-key and go old skool style .

Get an injector block off to get rid of the fuel injecters in your center plate. Also remove and block off the EGR valve hole. http://www.mazdatrix.com/getprice.asp?partnum=18147

No Kidding that easy! What about them barrel looks valves behind the intake that are operated by the vacuum cans on the front of the intake. Do I have to do something with that?

Thanks Jeff I will order them along with the intake and side drafts webers. Anything else you think I need? What about the oilers the go into the injectors in the block?

You will just pull them out of the end plates if you go carb. They help keep air velocities up by being closed at low rpm's.

BTW, I have a '59 with a 1275 and T5 tranny. The car is a blast with the 100hp engine I have, it will be down right scary-fun with a 13B! You WILL need the later Midget discs up front if you don't already have them.

THANKS JGREWE. Yeah this thing should do sweet burn-outs and donuts for sure. I'll post so vids once its complete. Seeing it had a 948 motor to begin with, this swap should raise the bar a few atmosphere. Thanks or the info and I like your footer, I keep an eye out.

Sounds like you mean the auxillary port actuators. If you're removing the stock intake and going w/ a carb setup, those will be gone. There's no way to retain them beyond fabricating a custom manifold.

Thanks for the info. What do these aux ports do anyways. If I remove them will it harm anything?

It's a 6-port engine. Below 3800 RPM, two of the six are kept closed to maintain intake air velocity with the stock intake manifold. This boosts low-end torque. But you're planning on a two-barrel carb, which ought to give it some decent low end as well.

The auxiliary port actuators can be retained. This is a sidedraft we're talking about here, guys, not a downdraft. He keeps his stock LIM. Assuming, of course, he's getting the Racing Beat sidedraft UIM.

Actually, I'm planning on getting a lower and and upper from Rotaryshack with the carbs, so I'm going to pull them as Rocket suggested. Any thoughts on this set-up vs the Racing Beat set-up? Thanks for the help, all of you guys are helping stay ahead of schedule. Hoping to get it fired up in 4 weeks.

Hey man THANKS! I'm using the stock 1987 tranny and stock Bugeye rear-end with hardened 1/2 shafts and double bearing outer hubs. You can see a video on my other thread "Bugeye Update" on this board!
