74 Rx4 GTR

In work on aquiring one. Gold with black interior, body color rims, luggage rack on trunk, GTR stripes/hood, definetley a project, but 90-95% there. Some rust (duh), but as I've read over and over, HAS to be super rare. Very few Rx4's to start with, plus the few that ended up getting the stealership 'treatment', (in gold) got to be one of VERY few in existence.

Been aware of it for a couple years, finally decided it needed to be mine.

Will post pics when it gets to my place.

OR 74 rx4 gtr

There was one like you're tracking down that was offered for sale in mid 2009. I lost the old pictures of it. I wonder if it's the same one.

... from Federal Way in 2009:
The rx4 has bad rust at the lower front windshield and lower rear quarters, may have some on front floor pan but trunk is good and nose is good, it has the big bumpers, has a roll cage, maybe a 2 point ?, not a 5 point so it can be used or removed, console is beat and needs a few dash parts, the hood is still good but is getting the typical rust on the underside and needs to have the tach welds popped to properly restore it.

Here's a pic of my 74 RX4 GTR; Pearl White and Black/Gold metal flake.

It HOME! Immediately started pulling stuff out of it to get it dry. Original description from 2009 ad is correct. It needs help, but is an awesome starting point. All the window trim is excellent, glass is all good (1 rock ding in windshield), interior is complete, and in reasonable shape, missing the console cover and rear ashtray, headliner is nice, overhead console is there, has a 5 speed, dash has a couple cracks, as does the dash board face, but I'll make do, original steering wheel is excellent shape, has all trim rings and caps. Only real issue is the rust- lower windhield areas are pretty bad, trunk floor had the pad on it holding water against it forever, so its got pretty severe surface rust, pass side lowers are gone in the back, and the rocker is suspect. Probably the worst part is when the people who were storing it were pulling it out of it spot, they tore open the pass side frame horn, and tweaked it a touch. Also completely destroyed the lower valance. Thats going to be a bit of work, but it let me see inside of it, and its very clean. I have yet to pull the seats and carpet, so I'm mentally preparing myself for the worst, but I don't care. This is a project for a later time (I have 6 others in work currently- some driver's, most not) and I'll continue to be on the hunt for parts and pieces. Engine compartment is in good shape, had no intake on it, so interior condition of the engine is unknown, but that will come out anyway for a thorough inspection. Has the mentioned AutoPower bolt in roll bar, bumpers are not wasted, all the lights are intact, etc....

AWESOME starting point. Mental plans are for a disc brakes, front coilovers, 14 inch Mesh rimes (painted to match the body color, like the stockers), and a thorough clean up of everything. Eventually, possibly a 3rd gen single turbo, but at first, I'll get it going with a nice running early 13B.

Pics as soon as I can sit down and get them loaded!!!

We will be post office/PayPal friends, John, to be sure. How's your dash parts look?

Windshield has the built in antenna, also, although I'm sure its non functional at this point. Still cool to see it in there.

Can't wait to see this one turn out. A personal goal of mine is to have a collection of classic JDM sports cars, all drivable and 95% OEM. the RX-4 is a beautiful car, so I'm definitely subscribing to this

I've got a reasonable collection in work:

'73 Rx2(sooooo close-brake work, carb tune, and she's a driver)
'71 510(don't ask-I'll post a pic. Bare shell with no trunk section, core support, doing the pans)
'71 240Z (mechanically done, drive it all the time-needs seals, carpet, and paint)
'74 Rx4 (Pics will show, project for a later date)

Don't really have any more on the wish list at this point.... Maybe a Kenmieri or a Hako, but I have spent NO itme looking into either. I've got enough in the world of unobtanium to locate.

Paint plan is to get it clean, and to repaint it the original color and GTR design, except the black accents will be shiny under clearcoat.

I'll see if I can make this work.

Pulled the drivers seat, and lifted the carpet and jutte padding- floors are good! At least on the drivers side.

Only getting it dis-assembled enough to get it dry. Putting the parts I remove in bags and boxes for later. I'll have the front and rear seats, center console and roll bar out, and pull the carpet completely. Please don't expect to watch an ongoing rebuild. I will do a little when it makes sense, and post.

Thanks for the interest.

Trim rings and centercaps are all there. I have a set of Meshie-style wheels that I think I'll paint body color to keep the GTR scheme. Depends on what I come up with for 4 wheel discs. If I can go 2nd gen, that gives me a ton more wheel options.

Well, it was too good to be true. As more of the carpet and 2 layers of padding came up, the more the nightmare was uncovered. Gonna be some fairly extensive floor pan work required. I'll need to heat and remove the sound deadener to know for sure, but there are a few spots that its the only thing making it look like a floor. Oh well..... Not like I haven't been down this road before. As a matter of fact, I'm on it currently with the 71 510 that you can see in the background of the pic. The Rx4 will be for me...

To the original OP I wanted to know what makes the GTR model different than the other RX4 models? I tried searching online but can't find any info specifically pertaining to this model.

During the summer of '73, I worked selling Mazda's at the factory dealership. The RX4 came out in the fall or winter, after I left but iirc the 'GTR' was an option offered by the dealership(s). As I understand, it was a cosmetic package and didn't have any 'go fast' components, just the plastic stick on 'GTR'. My white one had the hood and trunk with the same material. Some other GTR's appear to not have the black vinyl applied to the hood or trunk.

Thanks for clearing that up hoofhearted- I wasn't that clear myself. Mine has the GTR stripes, blacked out lower valances, hood, grill and rear facia, color matched wheels, bumpers and side marker chrome trim, and the luggage rack. Otherwise, nothing to set it apart. Got to be the rarest of the Rx4, other than a special order mystery car.

What do your floors look like in the 76? Are they the same as the 74? Are you parting it?

What dealership was offering this?

Sounds oddly familiar to the story off a Calif dealership and its "Freeway Flyers" and late 77 REPUs... another one of the oddball dealer promos that I can't find any paper on.

In all the years I have dealt with the old school cars there have only been two maybe three of these I have heard of, never seen one and all the old dealers I have dealt with in the midwest and south say that there wasn't such a car. It seems that this may have been a regional dealer package or promo. I would love to get some hard info on it because otherwise it doesn't really add value to the cars.

Hopefully there are enough guys out there that have a small piece of this story that maybe we can figure out all the info about them.

thanks for posting the pictures of her and keep the info coming as you find out.

...
Delon Mazda, in Salem, Oregon was the name of the dealership. They are now Power Mazda.
Sorry, I don't have any hard info.

Thumbs up If momma ain't happy, then no one's happy!

I got my RX4 GTR by trading a salvage title 88 RX7 Convertible, in December, in a snow storm, for it.

The passenger door latch on the RX4 was bad and the door would not open.

The prior owner's wife got REAL tired getting in the drivers side then climbing over the center console to get in (and out).

If momma ain't happy, then no one's happy!

Ha- My passenger door was stuck also- had to pull the seats and consloe out the drivers side, pull th edoor panel, and 'unstick' the latch mechanism. Still not totally functional with the handles, but its open. Deal with THAT later.

I wonder if there are any guys still at University Mazda in Seattle that may have a recollection of this package.... Fisrt place they hit the US shores, and when I used to get parts from Dick, he knew part numbers for all the old school stuff off the top of his head. I cleaned them out of alot of thier NOS Rx2 stuff back in 91. Need to ring them up and see. Would love to get some credible history of these. I, too, have only seen the 3, and they are all different colors. I found an old U Mazda receipt when I was cleaning it, and it had a PO's name, but the number wasn't valid anymore. I'll see if I can locate him online.

Amazing find! You don't find too many RX4 GTRs to begin with. Your RX4 actually makes me miss my RX4...

i was under the (prolly incorrect) impression that the GTR version included those wacky little trailing bars on the rear end & a front steering stabilizer .....

black out treatment looks cool nonetheless, matte black hood rules

I will, but with whats come out so far, and the fact that the sound deadener is the only thing holding the shape of the floor in some places, I'm afraid to whack anything with a hammer just yet. All in due time.

How's my box of parts coming, John?
