13B Powered VW Squareback

I'm almost done buying a 1971 Volkswagen Squareback from a friend of mine, will hopefully have it before the end of July. I'm trying to get a list made up and an idea of how everything will go into the car as I'm going to be putting the S4 13B engine that was going to go into my Concept One Buggy but started thinking and decided that the engine would be better suited in this instead.

First thing that will be done to the car is get everything working like it's supposed to and get the TTL done before the conversion is even started...

The car shows 31xxx miles on the odometer which I'm not sure if it has rolled over already to make it 131xxx but really hope it hasn't. Some of the main features of the car that are going to stay on the car are the factory trailer hitch, and factory gas heater up front.

Pictures of the car:

I've been trying to get an idea of how to run the FMIC, radiator and radiator hoses... Anyone that has done this before have any suggestions on how to do this without running them under the car as it will be getting lowered using the torsion bars up front and the trailing arms in the rear.

More pictures and updates will come as I get stuff done.

Good project! I'm putting an S5 13b in my 69 bug. The engine is mounted, now working on the coolant lines. Should make my stripped down bug fly!

G'day

An interesting project.
The first thing I would be doing is to make sure you have enough money in your budget to upgrade the brakes to power assist 4 wheel disks.
I did on mine and had a situation recently where I was very glad I had.
With the rotary the car will be a lot quicker than it was ever designed to be, so everything has to be upgraded to match the new power.
Pictures are always good and more are even better.

Good luck with your car.

Cheers
Graham

I've decided to not lower the squareback and just run the hoses... well pipes in this case under the tunnel of the chassis seeing as this is the only way to go about it logically.

Will start stripping down the 13B to just the case it's self (no exhaust, EFI, OPS, OMP, ect.) Hoping to get the engine into the car by October at the latest.

All the brakes will be upgraded to disk before the rotary is installed but I didn't think you could apply power brakes to the car though...

Here are just a few more shots of the cars interior... mainly the dash and under the bonnet... Also a few pictures of my old 69 squareback which my dad now owns.

(Under the Bonnet... Front trunk for those that don't know what a bonnet is.)

(For some reason the PO stuck those word strips on the dash to tell him when to shift sense there is no tach in the car.)

(31415 on the odometer)

(Showing the year it was made front the driver side B pillar)

I'm leaning towards actually mounting the FMIC inside the compartment that the ECU sits in inside the driver side rear fender with a fan or 2 pulling air to it... Should work easily enough to keep it cool.

As for transmission I'll run the stock transmission until I can afford to get a swing axle built up to handle it just need to keep it slow until then... It will shift sooner then normal from 1st to 2nd then 2nd to 3rd but should slow down for 3rd to 4th.

Also Current plans for the squareback (Will add to this list if I think of anything else I'd like to do to it)

Car Specs:

Engine - 1600cc with efi
Brakes - Stock (Discs and calipars up front, drums on back)
Transmission - Stock Type 3 Transmission

Future Car Specs:

Engine - Mazda 13B Series 4 rotary engine
Brakes - BAD Series 5x130 disc setups for both front and back by Air Kweld
Transmission - 5spd porshe (not sure which one yet), If not then a built up and geared Type 3 Swing axle

Installed Mods:

Completely stock - None at the moment

Future Mods:

Radiator up front
Radiator hoses ran under the car to the radiator from the back
FMIC where EFI computer goes in rear driver fender (W/ fans)
Fans mounted at bellow inlet blowing in to cool the engine

I'd like to be able to update my original post if i can when I have updates instead of constantly adding to the thread if at all possible.

Anyways, I finished paying off the squareback and got it running with its original air cooled motor (But now need to fix install a helicoil in one of the spark plug holes as the engine blew it out if it's place while i was test driving it). Also found out that the car has spent it's inter life in Nebraska and that I am the 3rd owner.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about doing the swap... Should I keep it fuel injected (Only need a computer, engine harness, and adapter w/ weight from an automatic), or go to carbed (would need a weber 48idf, upper intake mani, and distributor)

Also I will redo all my photos as I had moved them around and need to fix them so everyone can see them.

Inside the car w/ the front seats out.

Engine compartment will need to be redone too support the engine and also to fix the rust.

Im in the process of doing the same thing but in a fiat 850 using a vw tranny. I will be doing a 13B carburated because its a simpler swap than trying to figure out the wiring for the ECU
