I have 3 Mazda 323 GT 's all the boxes are fine (appart from one on which some monkey has lunched a synchro) and the box that is currently in my rally car has 140K on it with no signs of a problem. The 323's have mariginally more torque and power than the ZX2's as well

Maybe the turbo is helping the tranny live. I don't know if they sell ZX2s over there (doubtful) but it's a 2-liter Zetec powered 323, basically, although Ford did some good updating of the awful rear suspension design. The ZX2 engine, besides having a beefier bottom end than the Zetecs found in Focuses and Contours (Mondeos), has variable exhaust cam timing, for even more bottom end torque.
Basically you have to be *very* gentle on the throttle in first and second gear, or the tires go up in smoke, even when accelerating from a roll. I've gone 1/4 mile in one spinning the tires in 4th gear, wheel nearly to full left lock to keep the car going straight. In the rain of course, but the reason it rains is so we can have more fun driving... That was the vehicle's third transaxle and the car'd only had 50k on it.

Man, I've gotta do a front wheel drive rotary someday.
