12a powered AE86 Corolla questions

I have been thinking about starting this project for some time. I may be buying a '86 Corolla SR5 sooner than later. I have done some research on the swap on this site and club4ag.com. I understand that a custom driveshaft has to be made, along with transmission and front engine mount. That is the easy part. But I would like to try and acquire more of the little details such as the ignition and carb system, throttle cable set-up, gauge cluster, etc. Does the oil pan have to be changed? What is the best fuel delivery set-up?

Thanks,

Andrew

Some helpful information about mounting that I have put together from this and other forums for anyone else interested.

"Just need a bed frame and a custom tranny frame...I drill two hole on the bed frame for the enigne once you have that need to weld a plate to get the two bottom bolt of the engine... Drop the crossmember 3 inch down.. Add a thick metal plate between the crossmember and the car frame... Drop the enige and measure where you want to drill the hole at the end of the bed frame to the car frame..... Once you get the tranny in just have to make a custom brace to hold the tranny up."

"This particular motor mounts off the front cover, and nothing on the sides. We just had to mod the tranny tunnel and make sure the drive shaft angles are correct. Thats the hardest part is to make sure your driveshaft is lined up properly."

"For the motor mount I used the mount from a first gen RX, situate the motor where you want it, then I wraped the frame rails in the engine bay with 1/8 x2" angle iron. Then mod/ add to the Mazda motor mount so it reaches the rails L & R weld it in. So its kinda like a motor plate or a mid plate but in front."

Thanks,

Andrew

Also some information I found on fuel and wiring...

"SR5's have a mehcanical pump driven by a cam and is bolted to the head of the 3A-C good luck re-using it."

"Carb was done for simplicity. We only had to wire 5 wires, alt, power for coils, tack wire, starter wires. SOOOO SIMPLE. Best bang for the buck. Revs faster then any 4ag ive seen driven at track."

"As for the fuel lines, the old ones are all ripped out and replaced with all aluminum line. It is also running an external in-line fuel pump."

Anyone using the factory Corolla fuel tank with an external pump? Which one?

Thanks,

Andrew

You pretty much has all the info about what needs to be done. Take a look to this starlet of a friend of mine on how it was done, could give you ideas on how to do it for your AE since starlet/ae are pretty much the same.

And this one down here is how mine was done.

This other red starlet is from another friend of mine

This is only for the engine, the tranny will need a custom plate too but once you do the trick for the front it will be pretty much done the whole swap

^Nice pictures and mounts! But I have seen enough mounting pictures to do the install in my sleep. I am more interested in everything after the initial mounting.

Can I use the Toyota factory radiator? How is the throttle cable hooked up and do you need to use a different one besides the rx7 or corolla throttle cable? Has anyone kept the A/C system? Oil cooler mods?
Thanks,

Andrew

I have seen people using the stock radiator, but I used a different one(from subaru).

My throttle cable is the factory that came with the starlet.

You can kept the A/C system, all you need to be aware is the space issues.

Well I definitely plan on keeping the AC, living in Texas, but don't REALLY need the PS.

I guess the factory Corolla throttle cable would work.

Any recommendations on fuel pump, lines, etc.?

Thanks,

Andrew

I am using a Carter Fuel Pump since my engine is 12a carby. Also I have a Holley Regulator.

Right now I have rubber lines but I will change those to braided in the future.

Here is a video of my car

That looks awesome! I am in the process of purchasing a stock 12a with good compression, 5spd trans, driveshaft, and Weber carb with side-draft manifold.

For your fuel lines to be done properly PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD use normal metal brake line like all the original car manufacturers use.

You can buy it from a brake shop, and once you get it to length and bent you can flare it, or have them flare it.

If you are planning on using a standard mazda carby, then also please use a standard mazda fuel pump.

The standard mazda carby will need a return line and a feed line, the toyota may not have a return line at all.

Personally I would be stripped the OMP (oil injection) while the engine is out of the car, and block off the port on the front cover. Strip all the emissions, all you need is a vacuum line to the distributor, and a simple crankcase ventilation system. Look for a carcoal canister from the rx-7, or use the one thats in the toyota if it already has one.

Personally I think you should try to use mazda equipment where possible. you may be better off trying to put a 1984-1985 GSL/GSL-SE rear differential in the car. I have heard that LSD's for AE86 are very expensive!

Yes I will most definitely be using the factory metal lines or ss braided. The SR5 Corolla is carb so I believe it does have a return line. I will be using a Weber 48 carb with side draft manifold. The SR5 motor has the fuel pump ON the motor, so I guess an external pump would be best.

I also planned to pre-mix so I will remove the OMP and lose the emissions.

Thanks for the help.
