It's like an autostick, sorta. It uses engine oil in its torque convertor. It feeds from the end of the e-shaft and returns at the lower corner of the bellhousing back into the pan through a hole in the rear plate.

I've had a couple of J-spec R5 13Bs that came from cars equipt with that strange device, but I've never seen one in person.

sweet you took a trip out to rons moms. there is still lots of goodies out there.
I was talking with john about that and it its a torque converter for the buses that have manuals transmissions. yes it sounds weird but i guess the buses in japan or something have manuals in them as well as this torque converter to make the transition thru shifting smooth so you get no jerks when shifting. pretty sweet piece i thought about grabbing it when i was out there but it would have no purpose

You need an engine with the right features in order to use that thing... Old shaft with removable blind plug. Rear plate with a hole and steel sleeve for oil return.

I would never put that on an engine, you want to get rid of rotating mass not add like 20lbs. that looks really heavy. Its interesting though, i have never seen one, just not something i would use or spend any money on.
