WA Washington global warming fee

So, I just heard that Washington State Senator Pridemore, is proposing implementing a carbon fee on engines larger than 1.9 liters. It is a sliding scale starting around $250 annually, up to $600+/- for the big six to seven liter engines.

I am safe with my 13B, but not my wifes Trailblazer.

Isn't that included in the price of gas? Where would the money go?

It apparently has been referred to the Senate Transportation committee. I seriously doubt that it will ever make it out of that committee this session (or any session). Even if it did make it out of committee it would still need to be voted on by the entire senate. Even if it passed there, it then has to go through the whole thing again in the House. It just ain't going to happen.

Interesting though, the bill called for a fee based on engine displacement, not mpg. That of course would be great for us RX-7 owners, but not for some hybrid owners. Imagine an owner of a Toyota Camry hybrid (33mpg) paying more of an emissions tax than someone with an RX-7 getting 16mpg.

The other thing, is that in 2012, the engine displacement fee would disappear and be replaced by a fee based on the the amount of carbon emitted per mile. If they only new how much carbon my RX emits, I'd get soaked.

I realize this is/was a long way from becoming a law. As I have heard it is now DOA. I though the whole attempt was funny, based on what you just described. I average about 20 to 21 mpg. I would get off free, compared to hybrid owners, who get 30%+ better gas mileage than me. This is nothing more than a way to get back the annual license fee that was based on the Blue book value of your car.

there were different yet similar bills in both the house and senate committees. they both died there, but are only dead for now. I'm sure they will try again in the next session, and the next, and the next..... until they do get it passed by some means. we need to see if we can get the legislators that wrote it voted out.... and make a point of that being why, otherwise they'll never get the point.

the whole global warming BS is just a huge power grab made to play on peoples emotions about 'saving the earth'.... when in reality it's all about control, and taking away liberty on every level- one small thing at a time.

oh geez, dont get me started on global warming, it is all political, its not somthing we caused, maybe speed it up a bit but its somthing that happens no matter what. history shows its a cycle that occurs atmosphere warms up, melts the polor ice caps, cold water mixes in with the north atlantic current and disrupts its flow wich affects the whole climate and causes our climate to cool down and "fix" itself with another ice age, wich bassicly filters out all the crap thats built up over the years, and then it warms up again back to "normall". why does everyone try to make money off this like its the next microsoft? lol ok thats my 2 cents, and let me just add if that bill past well im just glad i live in oregon and were im at i dont even have emmisions tests

Blindly following the global warming band-wagon is stupid, I'll agree. OTOH, it is also stupid to discount good science just because it doesn't happen to fit our political mindset.

Once you get old enough, folks tend to take a long view, start thinking about their kids and grandkids. The problem is that the relationship between carbon emissions on global warming just may be correct. If so, by the time it is incontrovertible, it would be too late to do anything about it.

meanwhile lets give up our rights and tax the population into poverty to 'save the world', all based on an unproven THEORY.... all because it 'feels good'
