I'm more than adult, and I have more life experience than most at my age. Try living on Alki beach the #1 cruising spot in WA, then you can complain about exhausts. I never hear import kids. It's the homies with their booming stereos and the 40+ crowd on their HD's. They literally drive up and down the strip revving their engines and I've never seen one get stopped, but my friends have gotten stopped for modified exhausts just driving down the street. I've also had a friend get a stereo ticket, and a friend get a no front plate ticket. I've lived on Alki for 3 years now and I have yet to ever see one 40+ mid life crisis Harley Davidson ******* get stopped. Try hanging out on Alki any sunny day this summer and know my pain. And yes I chose to live here just as you choose to live in your neighborhood. You may say I can not complain since I knew it was a cruising spot, but I'm fairly successful for 25 and I chose to live in my near crime free, beautiful, expensive neighbor hood. And I should not have to deal with HD's just as you shouldn't have to deal with imports. The law should not be allowed to discriminate on any specific car culture, and our law enforcement has no right to descriminate how they enforce out laws. This new law is clearly in violation with the US constitution. The constitution protects age and age descrimination. This law specifically descriminates against youth culture. They are not protecting any lives or quality of life by allowing me to drive my old SBC Mk2 Camero with exposed headers, but I can't drive my Rx-7 with a resonable modified exhuast.

On another note I highly suggest you do some more reserch on Honda tuning before you state that a stock Honda exhaust will make more power than an fart can. Ture fart cans sound like hell and anyone with out a thought out exhaust should be kicked in the *****, but they do flow sugnificantly more than a factory honda exhaust and you will make more power with any aftermarket exhaust on any D, B, or K series Honda. The only Honda that doesn't make power from fart cans is the S2k. Shoot even the best $2k cat back only makes about 7rwhp over the stock exhaust on a S2k. But, I've seen cat backs on Civics net 14fwhp. I may not be as old as you, but I rebuilt my first Holley carb at 12, did my first SBC swap at 14. I've been wrenching my whole life, and my knowlege is vast.

The new noise laws are such BS... either the car is too loud or it isn't. Anything more or less than that is just nanny-state favoritism crap.

I have street port with 3" down pipe and a racing beat exhaust and I am not much louder than stock. It is more of a deep hum but not loud by any means. The Hondas are louder than mine. (but my turbo spool is louder than the honda exhaust) =}

have you driven a truly stock rx7 lately? They make like 0 noise at all. The only noise they make is a pshhhhh when you are in boost. Its really weird actually. I guess the big heavy precat, gigantic main cat, and stock exhaust make for pretty good sound dampening. Thing doesnt make noise until you at least remove the precat.

Exclamation

Here's an idea, how about you get a quiet exhaust, but drive around with your windows down with a friend in the car and both of you can yell as loud as you can at all times. I'm pretty sure they can't ticket you for that.

Also, I'll keep my 80mm straight pipe exhaust, thanks

I'll drive in low gear through neighborhoods at 4AM every day.

That's right, I'm that ******* kid (23 is still a kid right? ) with a fast car. And I'm ruining it for everyone else!

The law is stupid. If I go to a Subaru dealership and buy a SPT exhaust (factory part) I would be breaking the law because it would create an exhaust louder than factory. But the issue here is how do they prove it? They would need to record db levels for stock vehicles before they could ticket you.

Garanteed you would not have recieved a ticket if you went about it my way.

Cops are understanding people and if your not blatently braking laws they will usually give warnings when you approach them with politeness and respect. I have driven past cops for the last year since I went straight pipes/rb muffler and I just push in the clutch when I drive by cops with out any problems.
Have to agree with notveryhappyjack on this. I have been pulled over for various things (30+ over in a 55mph in the middle of Oregon, running a stop sign then racing(I won btw), and others) and never got a ticket. Yes, I have been pretty lucky but I know that being polite and honest with the cops got me out of the tickets. Plus, I have a perfect driving record, that might help too.

In regards to the HD being allowed to have loud exhaust. It is factory. I believe the law said in general, if you modify your exhaust don't make it above 95db. It said nothing about factory exhaust db level. So technically, the HD and other other "Hogs" aren't breaking the law because they are using factory exhaust(in theory). *sigh* While I don't agree with the logic, that is the law there.

I dunno about this law. I got pulled over recently to get some "advice" from a cop. Got no ticket because I was doing nothing wrong, he just felt the need to lecture me for some reason, even though I was breaking no laws. Anyways, I have a catless midpipe and louder than stock aftermarket catback. The cop actually said to me "Now your exhaust is loud, but it's technically not illegal..." in part of his lecture to me. This was 3 weeks ago.

So is this actually a law or is someone (either whoever told the thread starter or the cop that pulled me over) misinformed?

The cop that pulled you over was misinformed. They got rid of the decibal rule in 2006...
It basically says that if your car is 1 decibel louder than stock it's illegal. BUT WAIT!

"(3) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the engine of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and it shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle not equipped as required by this subsection, or which has been amplified as prohibited by this subsection. A court may dismiss an infraction notice for a violation of this subsection if there is reasonable grounds to believe that the vehicle was not operated in violation of this subsection.

This subsection (3) does not apply to vehicles twenty-five or more years old or to passenger vehicles being operated off the highways in an organized racing or competitive event conducted by a recognized sanctioning body."

If you have any car older than 25 years old you can run straight pipes... Period that's the law and that's why muscle car guys never get harassed. I suggest you keep a copy of this in your car incase you decide to take advantage of the loop hole in the books

I recently discovered it's way better to show some leg than attitude when pulled over. Last week at around 11:30 p.m. I was driving through Factoria on my way to the bank. Cop pulled me over at the drive through ATM (actually pulling me over is a stretch, he pulled behind me and hit his lights after sitting there for a minute). I was "zipping around" and changed lanes without using my turn signal. While he was running my license I used the ATM machine, why is it those damn things seem to be made for SUVs? I always have to get out of the car to use one and just so happened I was wearing a skirt. He only gave me a warning. That's two times in a row I've been pulled over now and haven't been cited! Two out of three isn't bad.

Personally I love the rumble of pipes on anything. I remember having glass packs on my 67 Chevelle SS and how it sounded. HD is about as close as you can get to that sound. But then again, I do like Harleys. I'm looking at race exhaust systems for my TII, it has no exhaust system on it now, I bought it that way so what am I supposed to do? As far as my stereo goes, there is only one volume level and that's LOUD. But I am respectful and turn it off before I turn down my street if it's late. I am also no spring chicken but if you act young, you will stay young. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Hoping this is a girl ^^.....

Bleh, emission laws are dumb. Lets trash this planet then move to mars....

Some cars are excessively loud. My friends 89 Probe GT for example. Big turbo, and pipe that goes straight from the turbo all the way back. That thing is loud. But it is a track car only. So, not driving it around the neighborhood much.

Remember, with a good lawyer you can do anything you want.... even kill someone... look at O.J. Simpson. Hell, he even wrote a book about it. LoL.

Money + Lawyers = Do whatever you want.
