Things I learned from my trip to Portland...

This past weekend I drove down to Portland to spend the weekend with my grandparents....aww how cute i know. Anyways a few things I noticed, some are funny..

1. once people hit the speed limit of 70 MPH no one generally goes over that
2. It is very hard to find any cute girls from the area of Olympia down
3. My car is so light my car pulls different directions from the wind flow from BIG rigs
4. my tachometer varies by about 300 RPM. Example 70MPH=3500-3900RPM...on flat ground, constant speed
5. No one wants to "play"
6. Chicks who own ricers are generally about looks (they were going below the speed limit)
7. I hate Portland streets for the billions of lights, One Ways, and just how ghetto it is
8. I need a rebuid....on the way back for about 60 miles the car would blow blue smoke in 5th if I let it go above 4000RPM after that it was ok
9. It always seems longer to get to the destination than it is to get back
10. Some of you may know that I own a SE and it had the air filter zip tied into its air box (previous owner lost lid). well on the way back I purchased a lid from Dan Atkins and it gained power. For weeks I've been gong system by system looking at why i have no power after half throttle to floor. Now I have SOME power at those points. I would guess it was starving for air.
11. I leak a lot of oil.......1 qt going down to Portland...oil cooler line fitting
12. Its actually cheaper gas on the Kitsap Peninsula than anwhere else right now

Always true. You know your way home better then you think and once you start getting closer to home the speed you travel tends to increase.

Been around the nation and every city seems to have the same 'ghetto" look. I guess if your going 70 it is hard to see good looking chicks lol and if they aren't looking at YOU, the back of their heads can be pretty ugly ;D Seattle to me is almost identical, I mean if you go to one part of town it looks nice, another it looks "ghetto".

1. The speed limit is 55mph on the "fast" parts of portland
3. my Dad's altima does that....
5. I might play with you if I had a 7
7. if you think Portland is bad.... Don't go to Hillsburo [though at least all the drivers up here are fairly normal.... go down to Eugene and people start getting weird.. - including my family]

... we should have a portland meeting

1. Wshington State Police are more numerous than Oregon. Washington also has undercover cars while Oregon does not.

2. How many places did you stop and how far off the freeway?

5. Read #1.

7. Where were you in Portland that was ghetto? I had the misfortune of intalling DSL all over the greater Metro area so I know some areas that aren't so fun. Since you mention one-way streets you were likely right downtown. Old Town is the worst. If you want to see ghetto there are much more depressing places than Portland. New Orleans under the harsh light of day was pretty bad if you ask me.

Oregon has under cover cars they have a couple of nice Mustang GTs and a Dodge Intrepid that you never see coming.

In Portland they've also got a few 90's camaros..

...and some giant military looking thing [much bigger than an H2] - it was behind me for like 10 minutes on MLK o_O

Oregon State Police has a couple of Camaros. My fabricator friend put roll bars in them. The City of Portland has undercover cars, but I've never seen a State Police undercover car.

I was always near Lloyd center, I only stopped 2 on the way there and 2 on the way back. And if we can't go above 70MPH then they shouldnt make our cars able to go 140MPH. :P

I thought that was the idea with "Hybrid cars"
"sacrifice power and speed, for super efficiency"

Things I learned driving
1. The craziest drivers in the US are in southern Florida, you have no idea, trust me, 100+mph is very common.
2. I Flew to L.A. last year to pick up a 88 AE and on the long, long, drive home from southern CA to eastern WA I discovered 2nd place goes to Portland OR
3. Big brother is watching you in Vancouver, WA - its freaky how many cameras they have.

look at the accord hybrid... while i don't condone anyone driving a honda, u can get those with if i'm not mistaken a 250 hp V6.... while they don't get the amazing mileage of the civic hybrid or the unsightly, they do get a lot better gas mileage than any comparable v6...

The theory is that it creates jobs. Much like mandatory ***-wipers would.

Couple of things I have noted about driving here in the Olympia/Tacoma/Portland corridor.

1. The highway will be slowed down to a crawl at the exact moment you need to get somewhere.

2. In general the highway will be slowed down by either:
a. absolutely nothing
b. people slowing down to stare at the sofa that has been sitting on the side of the road for the last five days.
c. A fender bender that has both folks completely on the side of the road, discussing who was at fault.
d. (less than 1% of the time) a real accident that has caused a legitimate blockage of a lane.

3. Someone will be in the middle lane.
-that person will be doing 57 in that lane
-Logging trucks will be passing him on the right
-you will kick right to pass him only to fall behind the uncovered gravel truck trying to get up that big hill just outside exit 111.
-You will see a line of cars to your left, all trapped behind 57mph dipchit but still going faster than you.
-all of them ignore your turn signal.

4. Traffic will get up to the insane speed of 64mph only to slam on the brakes when a Puyallup police car gets on I-5 en route to some court case in Olympia.

5. You will finally get frustrated and will try some of that sports car chit only to get trapped in the left lane by driver 2 and a string of trucks. You will of course miss your exit and will have to resign yourself to driving to the other side of Tacoma before the traffic thins out enough to allow you to get into the right lane to pull a clover leaf turn around.

and that it's "TOO DANGEROUS FOR US TO DO" :P [that's what the law says I believe... in Gov class one kid's project was to research how hard it would be to change that law]

I'll go up to 15mph over, but usually I'm not in a hurry [So only ~5 over]

Ah? I haddent looked at the accord much, just glanced at it - since it is the only hybrid car that I might actually consider driving SOMEday
