IS there anybody out there.....

who has what I'm looking for? That would be a complete S5 engine. Preferably turbo, but N/A is acceptable. At the very least it MUST be rebuildable. I have a 12A (from an 83 GSL) and a 13B (from a 85 GSL-SE) that are both rebuildable, in case anyone is interested in a trade, whole or partial. If you have the ECU/harness, that would be helpful too. I'll be dropping it into my 85 GSL-SE after it's rebuilt/ported. Prefer to stay within driving distance...say 300 miles from Seattle, give or take....

I'd be interested in hearing opinions on this swap, especially from anyone having direct experience. Not so much on the swap itself, but I'd like to know if you think it was worth the time/effort involved. Did you get the performance increase you were expecting? Do you think I'd be better staying with the original engine and just adding a turbo?

Thumbs up

I have been looking at this project for the last 6-8months. My engine had 180k on it and it was only a matter of time before the engine blew(by the way I have a GSL-SE too) About 2 weeks ago My enging finally went out so I decided to do the swap. Within the next couple weeks I will be getting a JDM 13band will start the swap. It does not look like it will be too tough(emphasis on too) but I will also have some of the electonic stuff installed from a shop.

I have never seen a turbo'd SE engine in person but have heard that there are tons of problem with tuning not to mention that you can safely only run about 6-8lbs of boost due to the higher compression rotors. Codeblue2 just bought up Iotus' turbo'd SE and I think that there are quite a few bugs to still be worked out.

This year at Apple Blossom Woundup7 brought out his JDM 13bt and put it on the dyno. He ran a stock S5 ECU and completley stock engine. He put out 189 to the rear wheels . I have to admit his car gave me inspiration for my project.

For me is it worth the trouble? I would say a big YES. Granted my engine is already blown and I have to either do a swap and or a rebuild but when I ran the numbers it was about the same cost to do the swap into my SE as if I were to have my engine rebuilt by atkins or some other rotary specalist.

There are tons of great threads not sure if you have read them or not justy thought I would thow that out there.

How much money do you have to spend and what kind of hp are you wanting to get?

I can't say money is no issue, I'm more concerned with the time. I expect this project to take quite a while and more money just means a longer wait. That's not even a major issue really since it has been 20 years since my last RX-7. A 1983 GSL bought new off the showroom floor, only had 8.6 miles on it. It had 197,000 when I got rid of it....regretted it ever since.
