So I have this 88 GXL...

I bought it new, but it's been a yard ornament for a couple of years. I just haven't been able to bring myself to give it up. I absolutely loved it when it ran good. It still runs but not well and I know it needs work but I don't have the time nor a place to work on it. It's got 200k on it, no mods. Recommendations? Didn't know if anyone was willing to take a look at it and give me their thoughts on it. TIA

oil change
fuel filter
new spark plugs

that is where I would start, things are not difficult to change and can be done by most anyone.

i have an idea....drive it over and leave it at my house go get a compression test to see if its worth you dumping your money into, you can get that done at mazda or do it yourself. or save up some dough for a rebuild.

So does it still run at all? If you show some pics of the exterior and interior we would be able to say if its worth putting money into.

It does run, but if does have a few issues. I do change the oil, oil filter and spark plugs and I have done most of the maintenance on it when it was more important to me. (Have another car now) I did notice when I was looking underneath it that the bushings are disintegrating. Also I have for years had a gas smell inside the car which Hayes Rotary (when they were around) were never able to diagnose. Actually I think they had caused it after I had issues with my injectors. They also did compression tests on it and were respectable then but that was 3 or 4 years ago. There also seems to be a problem with the electrical system where there seems to be a big draw even though the battery is new and the alternator was replaced. I haven't been driving it for a couple of years so I hope I haven't caused any problems because of that as well. I can take pictures of it to give you a better idea of what I have. I am willing to spend some money on it, just want to know if it's worth it. I know it's a car you have to love to maintain it, always has been quirky for me, I just have never felt this good in another car and really don't want to lose it.

hayes is 'was' not a very legitiment shop.

fuel smell inside the car could mean you need a new fuel pump, they smell all the time when they need replaced.

when you drove it did you usually drive it near 1/8 - empty most the time ?

always filled it up.

I do want to rebuild it, depending on how much it would cost. I just need to know if I could find someone or someplace to do most of the work.

search for jdm engine importers, if you only want a newer lower mile engine they can be had for usually less then a rebuild.
