Question Really, how hard can it be...?

I'm sure this will qualify as a very newb question.... but anyway

How hard would it be, and how much would it cost - to switch an S4 Auto to Manual?

The only good deal on an FC I can find is an auto [and I have to get a car pretty quick - I sold my Pulsar NX, so I'm handing it off in the next couple days - I can only drive my Dad's old car {the Altima} for a little while after that. - My sister gets it as soon as she has a job]

I just looked at The Second Gen Resource, and I can see why part of why the auto is so much harder:
"Drivetrain
Ratios 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th reverse
Manual 5-speed 3.475 2.002 1.366 1.00 0.71 3.493
Automatic 2.841 1.541 1.000 0.720 <No 5th> 2.400
Final Drive Ratio 4.100 (5-speed) 3.909 (automatic)"

I've asked a couple people and they've both said this would be a huge pain to do... [I'd have to find a Transmission, clutch, petal, petal cable, Speedo cable{?}, but I don't really know how much that'd cost, what someone would pay for an auto, etc]

I'm guessing I'd have to:
付ake apart all the stuff connected to the engine
付ake out the engine
付ear apart the petal area
付ake out the Auto
品nstall the clutch cable
病nd put it all back together

I guess if I could do the hard part [all that], I could do a couple other things while I'm at it... [What exactly is junk [to be removed] in the front end? one person's told me the stock air intake+etc is junk and heavy]

Oh, the one I'm thinking about is a GXL+2, ~129k, Red, with the ugly wheels [The ones with holes around the edge :P ] but only $1275 - "THIS VEHICLE IS GUARANTEED TO RUN PERFECT"-The owner of the business

So the last question [after I hear all the other stuff].... Should I keep fishing for another one, considering: that I need to find a car soon, this is a GXL [+2 even], and it's cleanly in my price range?

Thanks!

well.. u'd need a S4 NA flywheel, or a S4 counterweight and aftermarket flywheel, u'd need a clutch master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder, transmission, i'm not sure if the mount is different, u'd need a clutch and pressure plate, u'd probly need a pilot bearing, u'd need all the tubing for the clutch setup, a clutch pedal, i think driveshaft is interchangeable, u'd probly need the shifter surround from a S4/S5, u'd need to make sure u had basically every nut, bolt, hose, etc that goes along with the clutch system... if theres anymore, someone please pitch in... probly wouldn't hurt to have a haynes manual or FSM...

Lets see you would need.....
1) 5 speed tranny
2) Clutch master cylinder
3) Slave cylinder
4) Clutch pedal (duh)
5) manual tranny cross memeber and someone with a welder to relocated the auto mounts to the correct location
6) manual driveshaft
7) Clutch, pilot bearing, pressure plate, flywheel.

Wait a GXL+2 with the 10 hole phone dial rims? 4 lug bolt pattern or 5? Theres no way its a GXL if it has a 4lug.

The moving/redoing of the mounts is what really kills it for most people.

This website has a good discription of what you need to get this done. Just click on the "tech" link and then the automatic to manual link and your there.

Waste of time IMHO. By the time you buy everything you need it would be easier to buy a 5spd.

All you need is a cheap donor car chasis with no engine + a flywheel and the obvious stuff.

Well, I got the car:

筆echanically it's very good [the only thing in this category is the shifter is a little whoobly] - but otherwise nothing wrong [it's got a bunch of new parts in it: tires, front brake pads, injectors, air intake tubing looks new], oh it doesn't have Power steering but that's ok
髭lectrically it's almost totally good: horn doesn't work, clock doesn't work, and part of the tach backlight is a littlebit dim
肘t could use an AC recharge, but I don't use AC much anyway
品f you look at the pict, you'll see a little damage on the front, where the foglights could go, but other wise it just needs vacumed and waxed [maybe a little touchup paint too....]

I drove about 85 miles since I pulled off the lot [kinda a lot of driving for the first day ^_^"]

Oh, final agreed price: $1100 ^_^

*changes subject again..*
What's with the door locks? Do I have to use the key to lock them from the outside? [my cousin and I went into a fire work stand, and I made sure we locked the doors from the inside, but when we came back out I'd forgotten about the lock and just opened the door right up??]

Oh, and thanks for not yelling at me about the newb question ^_^

You don't need to relocate the auto mounts, you can just follow that how-to and make an adapter, works fine.

Once you lock the door, and start to close it, you need to lift up on the handle until its closed.
