Thumbs up paint job

Hey guys I'm lookin for someone/a good shop to paint my car. I'm doing a color change so I need the jams and engine bay done to. I got a lot of work to do on the 7 so I have a limited budget, so im trying to do the prep sanding myself, but I figured that would give me more money to spend on the rest of the paint job that is more skill intensive. Anyone know anyone good in Vancouver/Portland area?

most people thing the paint is the hard part, but the paint nomatter how good the person spraying it is will always look like crap if the prep work is done porely. so if you do the sand and prep your self make sure to take your time beacuse good prep work makes a better paint job. just my 2 cents and make sure to post pics when its done, lol

Yeah I'm aware of that. I've been doing alot of reading about it. I have alot of work to be done on my car and the more I can do on my own, the more I can spend on other stuff. I'm just trying to do a little bit of the sanding not the filler or primer. I'm gonna talk to a few painters and see what they say.

Bull its a steal, If your looking for a show car quality then yea thats a good deal but from what he said he's looking for a budget paint job thats better than a maaco. How much body work is needed on your car post some pics? **** for 6g Ill go out and buy the materials and learn to paint it myself, then time after time i could respray cars cuz you got the equipment.

Bodywork included in the quote I agree it would be a steal at 6 grand depending on the extent of the body work. You're probably looking at engine removal, glass removal, and plenty of body filler and dent removal PLUS paint and materials. most show quality paint jobs are gonna be 5 figures

Bodywork is very labor intensive; people who really don't have a clue think it doesn't take much to get a decent paint job (not dissing you Meximan). Okay, do it yourself then, and really find out how much a PITA it is. I'm going to pay someone else do it on the next car I build. Especially with a car that has the body lines of an FD. Jesus, I can't tell you how many times I redid panels to get smooth transitions. Hope you like carpel tunnel inducing sanding.

Granted, my car was on the extreme end, but still, once you start looking at the body in detail, you will find a lot of dents and low spots. See Pics

the only thing i was saying that a "quality: paint job such as a show car, or a really nice paint job yea 6g would be a great price. My family has paid 10g's for paintjobs on some of the classics we own. But then again some of the cars we own are trailer queens, and not drivers (something to think about). But from what cash money was saying it sounds like he wants the cheapest paint job but best quality he can get. in other words something better than maaco. Not a expenisive 6g paint job. Hell i dont think unless i was driving around a classic that i would EVER pay more than 3 for a paint job. I like to drive my 7, rock chips and everything else just add character.

I had mine painted last July to the tune of $5,400. Granted, that's steep, but they did one outstanding job. It's nice to drive a car that looks even better than when I bought it new in 82.

My engine is already out and the bay is stripped. Actually my body is extremely clean, maybe a few dings. my clear coat is peeling pretty bad. He actually was gonna come take a look at it but never called me back.

My friend recommended a kid with a shop, he came out and said he would do it for 3 grand with PPG paint, and remove the glass if necessary and everything else, and also install my lip and headlights. here is my buddy's supra he did.

I'll post some pics of my car.

I'll take my words back on the 6K, but still, in order to get a good paint job it will cost money. Just don't be too cheap on the paint job or you will regret it a few years down the road. What was the time frame that guy promised for three grand?

Regarding the wanting a good paint job but not wanting to pay the price... My roommate had his car painted by a family member of a guy he works with who does body work/paint. The guy said he'd do it on the side. Well he's an alcoholic and his paint booth was his filthy garage with plastic hung up... He did have much body work to do cuz he did a lot of it himself with the help of the painter's Dad, but his paint had lots of dirt and hairs in it and a few runs as well. It was just a subpar paintjob for the price he paid the guy to do it. Which ended up being about $3,500... After he was quoted $2,000.

I'm not knockin the fact that you get what you pay for, especially with a labor and skill intensive service like a paint job. But there are limits, and I shopped around. This guy came with a few good references and I saw his work, its really clean.

He said about 2 weeks, and even better he has a trailer and is coming to pick up my car for me on monday, saves me a little time and money.

People do not realize how labor intensive and expensive paint work is. You cannot get a cheap or even moderately cheap paint job that has any quality whatsoever. It's one of those deals, you have to pay for quality. Anyone who has any talent in painting a car is going to charge you out the *** because they can and should. It's an acquired talent that takes years to get right. My advise if you want a less expensive paint job would be to prep the car yourself and pay Maaco to apply their highest quality paint system to the car. It'll look fine. Just do it. Save your money if you must. That's just my 2cents

lol problem with doing that is they wont warrenty their paint job, no warrenty means they COULD do a shitty job since your not a paying customer which means 1 yr down the road you have flaking paint. Not to mention at maaco Its not just one person and one person work ethics that are applied to each stage of painting your car. There are 5-7 people that work on your car in each stage from prep sanding paint ect. That means any one of those people that didnt give a rats *** that day, just effed up the quality of the paint job.

Yeah exactly, If you are looking for a *decent* paint job, I think there are alot of perfectly capable guys that have paint booths set up in their garages or barns (this is washington)who do jobs on the side. You do run the risk of price variance, and delayed work, but thats why you get references.

And to add to what Meximan says, Maaco is either a franchise or corporate, which means a big cut goes to the man, and the rest is split between the workers. Like someone else said, if these guys were capable of doing killer paint jobs, they would know it and they be justified in charging for it.

I'm not sure sure what Maaco's nicest paint job costs, but it seems to me that you could get the the same job or better by paying some guy who does on the side a grand to do the whole thing, rather than spending the time to prep AND paying MAACO the grand. just my opinion, and little bit of speculation. haha

I'm one of those "perfectly capable guys that have paint booths set up in their garages or barns", but I would never charge anything less than like... 3k for even decent job with ANY body work.

Spray only, I'm sure I'd do it for a ton less, but body work sucks.. its a LOT of work if you do it right.

If I had to do it again, I'd man-up and pay the 2-6k to have it done right... Sure, now I have all of the equipment.. but now I don't WANT to do it again. lol
