families of slain officers suing the city
so, i've recently learned that the families of the four officers slain a few months ago are now trying to sue the city for their deaths. my sympathy for them is diminishing

my heart still goes out to the families for a few reasons
1: they are still left picking up the pieces.
2: the kids will still grow up with out both the parents being there.
3: i feel sorry that they would stoop to this and think that money will make things any better.
i do agree with the fact that this country has become a place that where a family should be more concerned with grief and trying to move past what has happened are now more concerned with getting every penny they can from city, state, or government.
the thing families have to realize is that people who serve the city, state, and government is that while in that service we know that there is always the possibility that something bad will happen and with that knowledge we accept that fact and still continue what we do.

They are police officers that got killed in the line of duty. What is there to sue for? I don't drive through someones house and then try to sue them for the damage done to my car. There must be something more to this than I know about because it does not make sense.

So just watched the news on this, between the 4 families they are suing Pierce County for $182 million, they say they plan on giving/donating the money back to the county and they "do not want to get rich", seems weird they are suing the county just to give it back.
Some info on why they are suing:
"The claims cite numerous phone calls by Clemmons made from the Pierce County Jail in which Clemmons mentioned wanting to kill police. The recorded calls were never listened to by jail staff. The claims contend that if jail staff had listened to the phone calls, even in the first days of Clemmons' incarceration, they would have known about the threats and acted to stop Clemmons."
"The Pierce County Sheriff's Department did not take actions or neglect to take actions that in any way - directly or indirectly - contributed to the murder of the four Lakewood Police officers."

most criminals make claims of harming police officers and never follow through. even if they did listen to the calls who's to say that "at that point in time " that he would actually go through with it, even if they did take precautions there is still no way to protect all the officers all of the time. it is just the nature of the job. i don't like the way things went down any more than any one else does.
as for the 182 mil even if they did give it back to the community they would earn 1,820,000 for the first year just from the money sitting in a account while they decide what to do with it. this is based off of the 1% apr that my credit union savings account earns if i leave money in the account.
don't get me wrong i think that the families should get something but 182 mil with the way city's are hurting for money as is and now the tax payers have to put out another 182 mil.... its a bit much.

The families should get whatever was set up in the offices contracts about getting killed in the line of duty when they became officers. Anything else is rediculous. It is a dangerous job and EVERYONE knows that.
After the fact you can't come back and say what was agreeded upon at the time is not enough. I don't go to my employer and say that the overtime I worked for free (as I am salary) I should be paid for now. "I really didn't expect overtime to be that hard! I think you should pay me for it now".

The families should get nothing and shame on them for sueing the city. Actually the city should counter-sue. Those four families already got so many donations from the community and it's not anyones but the shooter's fault for the four officers getting shot. If I got shot and died in Afganistan should the US government get sued? This country is full of greed and is the reason it's falling apart.

Plus the city volunteered to pay for all the children's education. It seems like all the donations the city and community pulled together wasn't good enough
