car still wont run
car still wont run
first a little backgrond...i had an 88 se. i had the engine , trany, exaust ... well you get the point, put into a 87 gxl. i drove it 12 miles, parked it & it hasnt run since...ive put in all new fule system, the 88 ecu,& still nothing. when i put fule down the throttle body it runs for 3 to 5 sec. second , on the right frot fender there looks to be a resistor or relay of some sort. the plug from the wiring harness is not there. what is it , & is that all that is keeping my car from running?
thats my next check....but i guess according to mazda the 88 doesnot have a main fule relay.so im at a loss for that one...what grounds am i looking for? and where are they located?
Sounds like you're not getting fuel for some reason.
Check fuel pump fuse.
Check fuel pump.
Look for fuel leaks at the injectors and pulsation damper.
Check fuel pressure.
You may need a shop manual.

So you can't start it unless you put fuel down the throttle body?
Will the car stay running if you hold the throttle body open after you get it started by putting fuel down the throttle body?
When you say throttle control sensor do you mean TPS, Throttle Position Sensor?

I had the same problem with an engine swap that i did. The motor fired in its new home 2 times for about 30 seconds each time. after that, nada. checked ignition, fuel pressure etc, etc. took it to mt peak automotive, mark fussed with it in his off hours for a couple months. It turned out to be a bad air flow meter, the box with flapper on the induction side. If you have a running car, swap in the afm and see if it works. I spent months on the forum and no one ever mentioned the afm/maf as a possible problem...
It sounds kinda like a problem my friend had. Check your ground on your AFM. The fuel system has a sort of a check so that it doesn't turn on the fuel pump until the flapper door is open. If the ground or some other connection is bad, the ecu doesnt' get the signal that the door is open and turns the fuel pump off after the initial burst of fuel during startup. This causes the car to start for a few seconds, then die out. I think you can check this by jumpering the fuel system and trying to start it (yellow 2 connection clip on the passenter side of the engine bay IIRC).
Secondly, the thing on the right front fender. From the sound of it, it's the idle mixture control thing (small, black, with a small flat head? screw for adjustment; bolted to the side of the fender strut area). I don't know if it would cause any of these problems from not being connected, but you never know.
