backfire?

ok so i was just woudering what makes a car back fire i know it would be ether noncorrect timing, or running too rich. i just started to notice that my car once in a while does a little back fire. and no i am n/a not turbo. i do know i need to get it a tune up. but can you all think of anthing else?

i have a gutted cat (im NA) and if im casually crusin around 3g rpm's and tap it a lil i give off a fairly loud pop or if im really haulin *** and hit 7.5g's then shift i get an even bigger pop. my guess is its maybe my air pump? 7's run naturally a little on the rich side (please correct me if im wrong im still learning about my car) so if the unburnt fuel and air being pumped in by the air pump mix and hit the hot pipes, it detonates????? i dont know just a theory.

yeah, my NA shoots them quite often im told.... but ive got no air pump to speak of, i belive its just a comb of the rich mixture and the right amount of pressure to the header..... Mine shoots them when im kicking it around 5k...... if i just play with the pedal a bit.... POP POP POPPP

what happens is when you nail the throttle more gas goes through the fi or carb system, alot of this fuel is burned off right away as it should be but there is a small percent that will remain unburned and pass through the engine into the exhaust system. when you have the paddle nailed all the exhaust gas is shooting out through the tailpipe at a high rate, compared this to when you are using no throtle the gases move slower out the tailpipe. Combine a lot of peddle with lifting off and on the throttle repeatedly, this will cause air to suck back into the exhaust
air+unburn fuel+hot metal will ingnite the combonation and you get a backfire that usually will shoot some nice flames out the tailpipes everytime.

try revv'n your engine to 4-5k and shuting down the engine at 4-5k, then wait a few seconds

its just one of those things. bird takes crap on red car, wankel shoots flames; kinda like that

it isnt always your tune or if something is wrong its just the way it works. ive watched videos of fd's on bmi done by RE amemiya and they shoot huge flames that last forever and i've seen street racers on video in japan who will have a flame that you could lite a moist cigar with they just last forever. thats the beauty of the wankel
