well recently my coolant seals went out in my fd so im looking for a shop near the Seattle area to ge it rebuilt. please let me know your experience with the shops and how your motor is running thanks Sam

 

Hey Sam, out of curiosity, how much vacuum does your motor produce at idle? (and at what rpm does it idle at?)

 

its vacuum is 25psi and idle is 750-800ish

Things to think about.

Clutch job
steel braided oil lines
injectors cleaned or replaced
vacuum hose job
check valve & solenoid check/ replacement.
Down pipe install
fresh gaskets (UIM/LIM, LIM/Block, Manifold/ Block, downpipe/ turbo & exhaust gaskets)

those are all things that need to be serviced, but are really hard to get to OR you can cause more damage to things if you try to do it yourself (without experience)

 

Intec tuned my car when the prior owner had it. No direct experience with them but I have heard they have someone there now who knows rotaries well.

 

thanks prometheus ive done all those things the past year except gaskets and does Pineapple not do install? 13bpower yeah his names Tony and hes really good with rotarys only thing is hes too busy doing a cosmo 13b swap into his fc to touch my motor lol. has anyone used Atkins and had good experience?

 

Pineapple has not done installs for a number of years actually. Rob moved in to the parts and rebuilds only side of things to simplify his business. Which is why we came in to existence, we do work for both Pineapple and now Corksport.

Ive seen Atkins porting, and spoken to Dan in the past.

He is a nice guy, but our philosophies regarding turbo rotary are very different.

For that reason, I wouldn't let Atkins touch my car with a 10 foot pole.

i guess you can say i am sensitive.

 

I wouldn't trust Intec to tune my car, let alone build my motor. Met the guys there, wouldn't trust them even if I had a Honda or 240.

Closest reputable option would be Oregon. Sad, but true. If you want it done right go outside WA.

 

If you want someone you can trust to do a good job take your car to Marc at FD3SEngineering, he is the only person I trust to work on my car.

 

If you choose FD3S Engineering, there is a good chance I will be helping with the install.

Or at least watching, gathering ideas & experience.

Doesn't anyone here know Jerry Wright? Jerry is the man. Just read his history and compare it with anyone else in the northwest. Jerry has been very helpful to me since I started tinkering with rotaries back in the 1980s. I have never heard any complaints about anything Jerry worked on.

I asked Rob about Jerry Write, he said he is one of the few old time builders that are still around.

He is very honest & friendly.

Integrity goes a long way in our community, and to be stuns for so long & to have competitors speak so highly of youis something in it's self.

I think this is what Rob meant by old timer engine builders, when builders shared information & buisness, instead of talked **** about one another and do whatever they can to make a few extra bucks.

 

My 93 is exchanging oil and antifreeze after only 70K easy miles on a Mazda factory rebuild. I went through Mazda last time for two reasons: 1) a shortage of known Rx7 specialists around Seattle, and 2) I thought a Mazda rebuild would perhaps be more reliable (foolish me). Mazda now quotes about $10K for motor and turbo rebuild. The turbos were rebuilt by Alamo in Kent when the old engine was replaced, and have had a nuisance oil leak since they were installed.

So... I am looking for an update on info on mechanics with special experience on Rx7 engine rebuild replacements and shops for turbo rebuilds around the greater Seattle area. Most the postings on this thread are a bit old. I see the Jerry's little car shop info, and I can try calling there, but trying to look for whatever options are out there. If Mazda can't rebuild an engine reliably, I am considering my chances elsewhere.

... or maybe a Capstone turbine hybrid electric conversion package?

 

Jerry is a really good guy imo, being local is just another plus. I would give him a call I've been to him once and had awesome help and great work.

BTW while we're bringing this back from the dead. Does Intec still "suck" at tuning rotaries? Drift Office do any sort of that work nowadays? I'm too lazy to call either one since I don't have the motor that needs a tune in yet.

 

Wow, it's just a coolant seal? Get your fat *** off the couch, learn something, and rebuild it yourself. Yes, batman.

Pull your plugs and see if you can tell what rotor it is. If it's the rear, you don't even need to open it all the way.

This has probably been asked, but i cant figure out searching this forum yet. So, can you all help me trouble shoot?

I need to know if there are any shops in eastern Oregon or Idaho. Also i am having smoke, comes and goes warm or not, comming out the tail pipe. Its in my 1993 rx7. Its bone stock, and has 115k miles on it. How long can i drive it like this before i come across bigger problems? I had a 1987 turbo car before that did the same thing and i sold it, but i want to fix this one!

I believe I am Oregon's only rotary shop, outside of Pineapple which does the rebuilds. Have you taken off the throttle body pipe to see if it has oil in it? Do you have any coolant loss? It could be a number of things. Your welcome to call the shop for some advice.

 

I have not taken anything apart as i dont want to mess anything up. I am not noticing any coolant dissapearing, the level seems to be staying the same. Where is your shop located at? How much would you charge to look at it and what on average is the cost of a fix for somthing like this?

 

The overflow tank was low, so there is some coolant loss. But that could be due to the top coolant hoze rear attachment leaking. The oil on the dipstick does not look milky, which Jerry said to look for. There was some oil gunk in the overflow tank. The Madzda dealer mechanics claimed there was antifreeze in the oil and exhaust, but I think I will take the car elsewhere for a second opinion. Especially with the cost of an engine in the balance. Thinking about JLC Shop in Kent. Doing the work myself is probably not in the works; I am a retired rocket scientist, not a retired auto mechanic ...
