Accelleration weirdness...

Why do you think this would be:
the car pulls normally in 1st gear until about 3someK, and then I feel it not pull as hard, and accellerate slower to 6k, and then when it shifts to 2nd, it pulls hard all the way to 3rd?

I also hear a small rattling around 5-6k in 1st, but I think that's my storage bin lid..

Other than that I need to replace the alternator belt [squeals if I rev it in park], and add some more oil [a little bit low]

So.. Any idea's on what that could be?

I added about a quarter of a quart of oil [the last that I had], that's still low

I checked the alternator belt and it's missing one of the little notch things on the bottom

and I tried accellerating hard in 2nd , and I noticed that while it was better than first, it was still worse than it should be.

oops sorry about that:

It's an 87' Sport, 4-lug, auto trann.
I replaced the alternator belt, and added more oil today, seemed slightly better but still doing it...

Does the SE have a sunroof?

Marc said that it was a sport because it is the only one without a sunroof...? [I have no sunroof, or power opts.]

Anyway, I believe the entire stock exhaust is intact [the only thing I've seen is the muffler tips are rusted]

If you can get away with "simplifying" (see removing) emissions equipment than I would try that. Check plugs, wires, electrical connections.

Ok, I had my friend's Dad loook at the actuators on the side of the engine, and reved it to 6k a few times, and he said that they didn't move at all

I tried moving them with my hand and it wasn't too hard, so I guess I have a vacume leak? I don't know what's connected to the secondary's control, so I don't know where to check..

On the 86-88's the aux ports were controlled by exhaust back pressure. Look to your main cat, you'll see a pipe coming out of it and running up to the aux ports. You may not see those actuators move by just revving it in park. My GSL-SE would move them when revved in neutral but my 88 GTU would not. I had a much larger exhaust on the GTU though.

Try wiring them open (forced always open) and see if you gain your top end back in first and the other gears. However the car will seem a bit slower/less HP in the lower RPMs like this. If you gain your top end back then the aux ports are not always opening and there are a few things you can do at that point.

Your on the right track with changing the plugs also.

sounds like an auto tranny problem to me, considering you can isolate the problem to one gear

upon further testing, it isn't pulling in second gear much either [just when it shifts into second]

Yea, I'm going to try the plugs on Friday or so [maybe knockout the brakepads while I'm at it..]

KompressorLogic suggested wiring them open too but I'm not sure how to. [zip tie? Wire? Something else?]

Ahh Cool [I'd love to come over and see it]
Maybe Friday or Saturday if you'll be there? [I have Friday off thankfully... other than that though, it's hard for me to get places because my work closes at 6pm {we're open mon-fri normally}]

Oh, and Zip-ties wont melt or anything, will they? [those things are pretty close to the exhaust if I remember right..]

*curious* I haven't looked into replacement exhausts yet.. [tell me more? - but I guess I'm supposed to get the cone filter and intake tube first, huh?]

My bro has had his zip tied for several months and they don't appear to have seen any heat (well not enough to do anything to them visually. If it makes you feel more safe you can use some mechanics wire or breat ties. Low end is kinda lacking but not very noticable compared to other NA FCs I have been in because of the exhaust and intake setup.

Well, I replaced the spark plugs [the old ones apparently weren't correct... - the first leading was one heat range and the second was another, same for the trailing :P - fixed that]
The car is running a little bit better now, but no change in the secondaries.

Right now I'm waiting for it to cool down again before trying to put the zipties on...

Oh and I checked the air filter and it looks pretty clean - but the screws were really tight on it

I'll post again after I get a chance to try the zipties

Well, I tried to use the zip ties, but I'm not sure if I had them down far enough?

[What I did didn't seem to have an effect - still slow in the high range, still normal in the lower range]
