Will Not Run without Choke on...Help!!!
Just recently dropped a 82 RX7 motor in my 83 RX7. The motor runs great as long as you have the choke pulled out or your foot constantly on the gas. Once you let off the gas or let go of the choke it dies, will not stay running. Have checked everything that we can think of!!! Looking for any ideas. My husband has been a mechanic for years, but mostly the Chevy and Fords and his wife (me) had to have a Mazda RX 7. So we are hoping to get some info from all you Mazda friends that know a bit more about these little beasts. Thank you in advance.

If you don't know when it was last done, a carb rebuild is always a good idea. Otherwise, it sounds like a simple idle adjustment. I suggest searching "Nikki idle" in the 1st gen section and reading a bunch of threads. I usually start with the oldest threads. There is a wealth of info to be found, and as you read more and internalize the info, the task becomes both simple and interesting as an exercise. It's part of the 12a Rx7 experience. Good luck!

There are a ton of vacuum hoses ( some hidden behind stuff ) even on the older ones and so on .,make sure the brake booster if applicable is not leaking , and loosing idle circuit . also any vacuum connections between firewall and engine . many times even with experienced owners hoses are either plugged on to the wrong line or are just missed (You do realize that these little engines can be more frustrating than children )
One thing for sure if it is your car you should be doing the work and maybe ALLOW hubby to help when necessary ..
cookboy is right do lots of reading and video watching . there are thousands of hours of good videos on almost anything .
one thing you could try would be to back the high speed choke screw out a few turns 2 or 3 turns ( count the turns ) and see if the car will run at idle with the choke pulled out to the position it seems to run now . this will tell you weather the little engine actually needs more fuel or needs to get past the idle circuit in the carb ,, If it still won't run with choke on and lower idle I would be even more inclined to think vacuum leak ,, if the engine runs with choke on at idle you most likely have fuel problems .
good luck . before you spend money on things make sure every step has been gone over and double checked .
