Why is the speedo soo different between my R1 and a JDM?

I have a Candian Spec '93 R1, and my speedo counts upto 280km\hr, and I see that the JDM ones only count upto 180km\hr ... why is there such a difference?

I won't say how high I've pushed my car to, but I'd like to know if there are White JDM gauges that count up to 280km\hr, this way I can keep things close to original specs while updating the looks of the car.

Jap domestic vehicles are limited to 180 because of a gentleman's agreement sort of thing.

Article.
