Realistically, there are simply two things you can do to the NA that don't involve major changes or engine work: nice full exhaust system, and a new intake w/cold air.

Note the stock intake and airbox works well and already has built in cold air, but you will pick up a little flow by switching to a cone filter.

After those two things, your next major gain without opening up the engine is a full standalone. With that, the fuel and spark can be tuned to the requirements of the engine and picking up 15 or so HP isn't unusual. The buy in is big, requiring a complete rewire of the engine and of course the tune by a competent tuner. Figure $1200.

After that you're into the engine.

Really, the NA isn't going to make big HP numbers and remain streetable, nor is it really that inexpensive to do so.

That car is entirely too nice to screw up with go-fast modifications. If you want a race car, I suggest either starting with a $50 roller that was saved from the salvage yard, or somebody else's race car that has over $20K sunk into it and sells for maybe $5K.

The only thing I see that you need right now is a cover for the battery. The way it is right now it could come loose when you hit a bump and short out your electrical system when it hits the hood.

Some performance-oriented things that may need to be replaced due to age:
- Exhaust (Recommend Racing Beat for street cars)
- Suspension dampers and springs (Recommend Tokico Blue or KYB AGX dampers)
- Suspension mounts and bushings, engine mounts, transmission mounts
- Clutch disk, slave cylinder, slave cylinder line
- Brake pads, brake lines, brake fluid, brake disks
- Synthetic transmission and differential fluid (Recommend anything but Mobil 1)
- Proper NGK spark plugs
- Fuel filter, fuel lines (especially check rubber lines at the engine), fuel pump (check voltage)

See Mazdatrix for short shifters, shifter bushings, and instructions on how to replace them:
