AZ some questions

question one
If im installing a front mount intercooler on an 89 gtu that im doing a 13bt swap in do i need the turbo hood? im thinking not but feel i should ask

No, you do not need the TII hood.

AZ more questions

didnt think so but needed reasurance. question two and three

does any one have the measurements of the correct size intercooler that fits without the most modification?

is there a site where i can find randon interior parts? (ive looked at ebay and craigslist) like shift boot, center air vent and the plastic piece under the steering column.

I don't know about the intercooler, but as for the other question Rockauto, Blackdragon, and our own "parts wanted" forum (once you've reached 10 posts, I believe) are some good sources. Most of my parts have been from our guys here, or ebay.

^ This is h_block88's set-up. He posts dimensions of the intercooler he uses. Notice that he didn't have to modify the bumper and was able to keep the bumper support.

The lower pictures, in post #11, are of Digi7ech's set-up. His "sandwich mount" is ideal for oil cooler air flow. Which is something to keep in mind when going with a FMIC set-up.

link -> Mazda Trix is your best bet when it comes to those particular parts. You'll pay a pretty penny for some things, but it'll be brand new. You can also try your local Mazda dealership. For used parts, look around in various 'For Sale' sections here on the forum. You'll be able to find things for decent prices, while improving your iTrader score.

I've been looking on eBay and have not found the interior piece "yet" . Hopefully replys count as posts. Cause I'm sure I'll find what I need in the gen 2 section that I'm not allowed it at this point. Thank you for the suggestions I'll be sure to inspect those sites

dwb87 right on TY for sending me h_block88's thread that helps a lot. those specs are exactly what ive been finding when looking for FMIC systems on ebay. the thing that threw me off mostly is when i see this in the posting (fits mazda rx7) ill most diffinately check out mazda trix site.

I just received my motor trans ecu and wireing from JDM today. and now know that ill be doing a few things befor it goes in the car end of april.
whats a good turbo upgrade for this 13bt? brand and model? and what size injectors should i go to? also with staying with the stock ecu? if i must go stand alone SDS then i must. im not wanting any thing crazy just a little more as im used to 250-400whp cars. is this possible or will sds be the only way.

im VW otherwise but had way to much fun with this car befor i poped it.

Try mazmart in atlanta ga. I got a few interior pieces and other stuff from them. They have a supply of used parts but if they don't have what you need then they can get the stuff new for a decent price, better than the dealership.

Be sure to do a compression test before you install this engine. You don't want to install a blown JDM engine, remove it, and then have to rebuild it or have it rebuilt. Ask me how I know.

If you're looking for power, yet wanting to keep things simple... Go with a BNR turbo. Read about their different stages. If you get the chance, talk to Bryan Nickell at BNR. He will surely help you choose the right stage turbo most fitting to your needs.

This will be determined by the turbo you choose. Whichever turbo you choose, you'll definitely want enough fuel to support it. You don't want to "pop" this one... If you're upgrading the injectors, you'll need a bigger fuel pump, too. (Search around for the Walbro 255 lph fuel pump, Bosch .044 fuel pump, an FD fuel pump, or even a Supra fuel pump.)

Can I ask you something...? What exactly are you referrring to when you say "SDS"?

The closest thing to the stock ECU you will get is an RTek v1.5 ECU chip. The RTek chip will allow you to utilize the stock wiring. Same with an A'PEXi Power FC. The Power FC will cost more, but will allow you to go further when it comes to tuning. You'll most likely need it professionally tuned. (This will cost you a bit more money.)

Read about A'PEXi Power FC here -> Banzai Racing: A'PEXi Power FC for the FD3S

^ Along with the FD3S Power FC, you'll need to use Banzai Racing's APEXi Power FC Harness Adapter (89-91 RX-7)<- link. I know this all seems confusing... But all of this is easier to determine depending on your desired set-up. And remember... You can always call these companies and talk to a representative.

dwb87 most deffinately gonna check everything out on this motor befor it goes in. I am a mechanic just not rotary savvy. being rotary is a completely different animal when it comes to why it works the way it works the reason behind my questioning. Normally Ive got my head so far into VW and Audi that its a walk in the park for me with bolt ons and upgrades. So I felt the need to broaden my knowledge on Wankel and rotary.
All the references are awesome and I thank you, they will be used. Gonna be tooling with it today for a little. Comp test and a minor tear down of the motor to get a parts list going on to add to the list I have started FMIC, water pump, belts, hoses etc. As well as getting the car ready..... finding the ecu, removing the harness, draining fluids etc...
the project is started but I do work pay check to pay check like most of the worlds working population does so Im looking at end of april possibly may befor its up and running.
Can I ask you something...? What exactly are you referrring to when you say "SDS"?
SDS = Simple Digital System

Now, may I ask?... What kind of power are you looking for?

how much variance is there gonna be if the motor cant be brought to oporating temp for a compression test? should i set it in this wonderful Tempe sun for a while then try to bench test it?

Don't even consider even thinking about wasting your time with an SDS EFI system on a rotary. Hell, I'm surprised that SDS even still sells their stuff anymore because it was state of the art in 1990. Now it's well past antiquated. Typical standalones on the RX-7 are Haltech, Microtech (very basic, more for track cars) and Megasquirt (DIY).

You don't need to be at operating temperature for a basic compression test.

As for intercoolers, can you TIG weld or have access to someone that does? If you can modify the tanks, then you can fit fairly large FMICs behind the bumper without having to modify anything. Just send the pipes through the rad supports.

Here's an example:







It fits behind the bumper support, in front of the circular crossmember. No cutting necessary and the bumper doesn't need to be unsafely gutted of it's supports. Plus it's back far enough that it's not obvious and isn't prone to damage.

Aaron cake hence all the questions i am asking due to not being familiar with rotarys. I figured as much for SDS to be out of date as i was using them on my 90 VW's. Thank you for giving me some up to date brands ill be sure to check them out with all the other research ive got going one. I do have access to tig welders and i like the way your set up looks whats the demensions on that particular FMIC?

You made it seem like you were hoping not to stray far from the stock ECU. You'll be far more capable of hitting your power goals with a standalone, though. (I've heard great things about Haltech.)

We're going to the Pavillions car show today if you'd like to see my intercooler setup or one of the other guys styles.

We're meeting at the QT at 51st ave and I-10 at 3pm and then leaving for Pvaillions at 3:30.

I HIGHLY recommend my style. I have not had a single issue with it and I track my car and drive it on the street.

There's a good amount of us rotary guys here that have many years of experience building them. Our ECU flavor is Haltech and Motec's. Tony at UMS is familiar with Haltechs and tuning rotaries as well.

im throwing all these questions around so that i can get all opinions. like i said im a german car nut but got this rx7 given to me had a lot of fun with it being non turbo befor it blew. getting as many pro's and con's as i can to help my decision on which path to go.
see with the new vw's and audi's its possible to get 400whp with just revo(a program flash) a small turbo upgrade and bolt ons. my knowledge on those cars is great so thats all i have to compare to. now the comparison is far from rotary but i get and understand combustion engines.
im also working with a slight open budget on this. and on the other hand I dont want to have to keep going under the hood to do upgrades. so if got a number in my head that i want to stay near to achieve 250-400whp in a time frame of 2 months. so far all the nudges ive got have been a big help. i spend some of the morning going to all the sites you've recommended and think ive got a blue print to start.

i would have loved to go and check this out unfortunately my means of travel in the valley is a 150cc roketa. im also not aware of where the Pvaillions are. maybe next time ill be checking out firebird raceway tomorrow to scope out the autoX going on. cant wait to get back into that soill be looking at whats going be in my class

I can't remember the dimensions exactly. Something like 17 x 23 x 3. Honestly, get out to you car with a measuring tape.
