What Is the Best Oil For FD3S ?
Hi Evreyone,
I need some help i am confused about the oil which brand to use which is the best of best ?
My engine is just completed and on the way From Japan it has been street ported and upgraded apex seals etc so which oil would be the best for my engine ? thanks
Knight Sport has the special rotary oil 10w-50
Greddy F2 RE-SPEC 15w-50SL
Greddy F-3 RE-SPEC 10W-40SL
RE Amemiya 10w-40
Idemitsu Racing Rotary Engine Oil 10W-30
Idemitsu Racing Rotary Engine Oil 20W-50

I have found that almost any good quality engine oil these days will do the trick.
Personally, I use nothing but top quality full synthetics in all applications. (I don't want to hear the arguments that these oils aren't suited for oil injected cars).
As I said above though, most GOOD quality oils will work being synthetic or not.

There are MANY perfectly good oils you can use. I believe it's better to change often (every 2k for example) and use less expensive oil than it is to spend more on the oil and hope for longer change intervals. The reason is fuel dilution - most FDs dump a lot of fuel into the oil and thin it out.
For this reason I use a thicker oil like 20w-50, since after a short time it will tend to be thin like a 10w-30. Definitely don't use anything thinner than 10w-30.
The porting and apex seal upgrades have little or nothing to do with the oil you should be running.
FYI there is not a lot of agreement on exactly which oil to run. Sythetic or not, 10w-30, 20w-50, etc, nobody agrees. But nobody is finding evidence of lubrication problems when they tear down the engines. So I wouldn't be too worried about it.

well i was reading that you cant use syntetic oil for rotary at least for my 84 reason i was told is that the syntetic oil will kill the apex seals dont know if its true :S

the oil subject is not clear evreyone has diffrent suggestion i think the best oil for stock engine would be the oem oil from Mazda dealer. i have seen many rx8 uses the original oil and never had problems but if the engine is highly modified than it will be good to have oils from the Japanese tuning company's and change more frequently.

In 1979, Racing Beat began testing synthetic lubrication products. Without a doubt, the best synthetic oils do perform well in extreme heat (over 300 F) and extreme cold (below 32 F), but by the nature of Mazda's rotary engine, the oil temperature never exceeds 250 F without severe engine damage due to other factors. After many years of experience with these products we have observed only one problem: because of the reduced friction, the time necessary to break in an engine, transmission, or limted slip differential (standard differentials are no problem) is excessively long, so we recommend using mineral oil in all three for a time to ensure rapid break in."

as a new owner (FC) reading through a lot of the oil discussion is somewhat daunting. I think I'll be going for a decent synthetic with regular changes.

But I think we should do premix with 2T oil or mineral oil and delete oil metering pump when we go synthetic

No.
Synthetic is fine to run. OMP can be run regardless of what engine oil is being used. Read about other oil discussions from the links in the FAQ:

I seem to remember seeing a highly detailed thread regarding the differences between synthetic and mineral oil, such as the pros and cons as well as actual numbers regarding temperature and viscosity. I'll see if I can dig it up, but the bottom line of it was that synthetic was pretty much superior in every aspect... except price :p
