It is what was holding the molding on, that isnt there now.

Thanks Rx7 Nut... so why have the key lock and the hinged end? Seems like a very odd way to affix some moulding.

Well the molding was all the way too it, I cant remember if it went around the key whole also. They moved the key from that spot to the center between the tail lights and above the license plate.

Mazda didn't always have the best ideas. search for the beehive oil cooler

ur car used to have the rear louvers on it and that's the prop rod to hold them up while cleaning the glass.

exactly right! looks like the car once had the original aluminum louvers
