Turbo Question

I see that alot of people are converting to a single turbo than the factory two. This setup is in the best mod setup alot. Whats the advantages and disadvantages?

Is the purpose of the two turbos to get steady boost throughout the rpm range?

How does the boost level work with a single turbo?

What can be eliminated with a single turbo system?

For future posts, you should include the year/generation you're talking about. The RX-7 existed long before 1993.

For 3rd gens, the twin-turbo setup uses a small turbo to produce low-end power, and a second larger turbo that is enabled once engine speed & exhaust volume get high enough. It is a sequential setup. It's designed to expand the torque band, and make the car more streetable.

Converting to a single turbo often means a loss of low-end in favor of more top-end power. Of course, it completely depends on the size of the turbo used. I'd suggest checking out the single turbo section of this forum.

Lots can be eliminated if the twin turbos go. There is a mess of related vacuum lines and solenoids. This is no doubt mentioned in the 3rd gen FAQ, which is at the top of this section & in the 3rd gen tech section.
