trouble starting rebuild
I have a fresh rebuild I did myself over the summer. It has 152 miles on it. most of the time it starts on the second try. some other times it takes 3 to 4 tries to start. Is this because it not broken in or what?
thanks

During the run in period your rebuilt engine will have less compression as the new seals don't perfectly fit the shape of the rotor housings, center and end plates. while running in the seals will shape themselves and you should get better compression and it should start easier.
Just want to make this clear I DO NOT have a lot experience with this, and you should seek advice from other people on the forum.

Yea, that made a lot of sense and I've actually heard it before. The starting is getting better everytime but it never starts first try. Will it ever start first try?

make sure you're giving it plenty of oil so it can build a suitable film inside the rotor chambers. Also check your idle (should be around 750 rpm) speed. I've driven in a fresh rebuild a couple times. Starting goes about like "fwmp-fwmp-fwmp-fwmp-fwmp-fwmp-VROOOOOM" which seems a little longer than normal (certainly takes a couple more turns than my corolla to get started) but it always starts on the first try.
If after 1000 miles it's still not broken in to your satisfaction, you might want to look at other factors. Is the ambient fuel pressure at the desired level (I wanna say 47psi but I'm not 100% certain. The FSM will tell you though)? If not, you need to replace or possibly clean your fuel pump. Are your injectors fresh and clean? New injectors or a good cleaning may improve your ignition. How are your spark plugs? A cleaning can go a long way, but for <$40 a new set will go a lot further.
Hopefully you get it figured out soon. What gen is it? (a lot of what I'm saying is irrelevant for 1st gen)

It has New Spark plugs, I took out the fuel pump and cleaned the fuel tank, new fuel filter. But yea hopefully its just because the seals havent taken the shape of the housings. And its a 2nd gen s4 6-port N/A
