Trouble shooting 1986 gxl
OK so an abbreviated history of the car. Bought new in 1986 by my dad, parked in the garage since 1990. Last winter I had convinced myself that I was going to do a sbc swap and had removed the engine along with everything else in the engine bay. I have now decided that I would rather just keep the rotary. I put the engine back in on Friday, and I have been chasing problems in the wiring since then. I finally figured out that I had forgotten to attach the clutch safety switch so now it will turn over. It will run on pure starter fluid. It has spark and fuel is at least making it to the end of the fuel line but I am not convinced that it is actually making it into the engine. It would not start when I first started working with it last spring. It had gas sitting in it for that 20 year period of sitting, am I correct in thinking that the injectors are probably clogged up? If not does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks Arron, I poked around a little today after school and tried most of the issues mentioned in the haynes manual for not starting. I got through everything except for the primary injectors and rail. The secondary is getting fuel and both injectors were within the normal resistance range. Is there a way to check the primary injectors without removing the extension manifold and dynamic chamber?

If you have a mechanic stethoscope, you can listed to the primary injectors clicking while you crank the car.
But keep in mind that all injectors are probably clogged beyond being functional.

Can anyone give advice on the removal of the extension manifold? I followed the directions from the haynes manual, but the manifold just wouldn't let go. I did my very best to jar it loose by shaking it, but the entire engine was moving with it. I also tried to knock it loose by hitting the studs but nothing I tried made any progress at all. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Nevermind, I had a hair dryer warm it up for a few hours (too paranoid about open flames that close to the fuel system) and it popped off. I soaked the primary injectors in brake parts cleaner for 10 minutes, put everything back together re-pressurized the fuel system and it fires right up after 20 years of not running. To say I am excited right now would be a huge understatement. Thanks everyone who has helped me to get this far.
