transmission problems

I have a 89 GXL the tranny was stuck in reverse with the shifter in neutral and would only go where first and second should be but would not be in gear. I fixed it to where it will go in gear and its not in neutral with it stuck in reverse, but now it only goes in to first through forth will not even try to go in to 5th or reverse. Whats wrong with it

from what i gather its your transmission sychro. on my 86 it dificult to shift into most all gears. i think its the same reason. yours just seems to be a more down the road. id have no idea how to sychro a tranny

check and see if ur model tranny uses the bushing that goes on the lower ball of the shifter. ur original problem has nothing to do with the synchros. bad synchros cause grinding when shifting quickly between gears, not cause them to get stuck.

i bought a short shifter and it came with all the bushings. my shifter had no bushings what so ever before that. and when shifting at high rpm into 3rd and it wont go it just grinds that would be the sychro?

well see when i try to put it in 5th it dosent grind or make a noise at all it just wont go in at all . it feels like the shifter isnt going to the right far enough and wont go in to 5th or reverse like somethings stopping it or in the way its weird

if u have the proper bushings it will put alot more pressure on the ball itself letting it shift better. mine barly shifted gears until i got new shifter bushings

sounds like the shift forks in the transmission are misaligned. the trans needs to be removed from the car, the tailshaft pulled off, etc. you'd be better off to just find another working trans and throw it in.
