thinking about getting a FC, have questions

ok theres a guy near me selling an 87 FC that im thinking about getting, but I have a few questions. ive done some searching about reliability and the like for RXs and it seem that if there taken care of there fine.
first the car, hes asking 1500 for it, I think I get it lower, but I dont know how much. like I said its an 87 with 200+ on the chassis, he claims the motor has 56k on it, its a NA car. the outside looks ok, paint on hood has all the clear coming off and is faded, the sunroof is rusting pretty bad, ac is not working because its not hooked up, waiting to see if it worked before the swap. interior is supposed to be in good shape, waiting for pics.

Im going to want to daily drive this thing, possibly commute with it a fair distance, I understand they dont get great mileage, all I want to know if will it leave me stranded. basically I dont mind working on my cars and a car of this age I would expect some repairs, but I dont want a money pit thats breaking down all the time, so I goess the question is should I get an RX now and daily it or get something else and they to find one later what I have an extra car if anything goes wrong? ive always kind of like the FCs and have wanted one, but I dont know if this car is even a good deal.

Like any car this really depends on the car itself and how it was maintained prior to you purchasing it. Ask for proof of rebuild or don't accept it as a rebuild.

well that car is gone.

here is another question though, what would be a fair price to pay for a decent FC Rx7?? id definitely like to keep prices under 2k if possible, I could probably go as high as 3k, but thats probably a stretch. I just want to know whats realistic, is a 1500-2000 Fc a decent buy or am just asking for trouble?? should I save for a nicer car?? remember id like a DD here that wont put me in the poor house or leave me stranded, or like I said before should I just get a honda or something and get a FC later as a toy??

If you are looking for a reliable car that you can trust on a day by day basis, get a honda. 7's are fun cars but they do need maintenance, stuff will break, and you ALWAYS have to wait for parts to arrive.

You can find very very good condition 7's for $1500 - 2k. The best thing is to be very patient and hunt around for a deal. A n/a 7 should be in very good condition to justify a $2k price. I suggest stock as possible to ensure some idiot did not install dumb mods.

My advice is, your ultimate priority is a reliable dd, get a honda or a toyota that is going to last forever because that is ultimately what you need. When you can afford to scrounge around some bucks get a 7 for fun, but treat it like a full time money pit hobby.

ok so just to keep the conversation going a bit longer, what if I went against my better judgment and youre advice, and still went ahead and got a 2g for daily driving?? what should I expect to break or what should I expect to fix?? I know anything can happen, but there have got to be some common issues. I dont mind maintenance and I actually enjoy working on my cars. I work at an auto parts store and funny thing you say you have to wait for everything for an RX, we dont even have plugs or air filters in stock for them

I am not sure if it is specific to fc's, but I had some electrical issues. IMO, wiper switch and HVAC control unit are common problem areas for fc's.

I got mine for 1200 with new shocks, struts and brakes it came out to 1800 and it had 117000 miles on it. I wouldn't go any higher cause you can find em for that price range easy, unless you want a turbo. If its not a turbo you'll have less chance of problems. I've not had any serious problems with mine and the gas mileage isn't actually that bad unless you do really short trips(don't get an fb mine used to get like 10-15 mpg...)

For 200000 miles and no proof of when the engine was rebuilt I would not pay more than a grand, your better off just checking craigslist every couple days for like a week and you'll get a better deal.
