Strange start problem
Strange start problem
Hi all. I got a 88' 2nd gen non-turbo, and it got some strange start problems. When I start it cold, it revs to 2k rpm and falls to 750 rpm few seconds later [but idels roughly] then dies; however, if I step on the accelerator for a little bit, it would then idels at 750 rpm firm. It has no problem at all when driving [even drive it hard], and it could starts almost immedeately when it's warm [won't stall at all]. But if I let it sit for 2 hours+ after I drive it around, it won't start. First I thought it's probably flooded, and did the unflood process as I found in the fourm, but it still won't start. Strange enough, if I sit it like a day and half or 2 days [after it failed to start], it will start again [idels roughly and dies during cold] some how. So, does anyone know what's going on with my car?

It sounds as though the cold fast idle system (the cold start cam and thermowax) isn't working. The car should rev to 3K, then settle at 1500RPM and slowly drop as the engine warms up. If that system has been defeated, the engine will try to idle at 750RPM just after startup and as you have seen, will generally stall.
Check the Haynes/FSM for info on this system. It is located on the back of the throttle body.
As for your flooding, a tuneup is a good place to start. And have the injectors professionally cleaned.

Thank you for your message Aaron Cake. I will check the cold fast idle system next time when I get to the car since I park it at my friends place. The last time i drove my FC, i smelled quite a lot of gasoline from the pipe.
