if the shifter is loose, remove the shift boot and **** and make sure the three 10mm bolts are in place and tight. if they are, remove the shifter and check the upper and lower bushings for breakage or wear. also ensure that the shifter return spring is not bent or broken.

probably the bushings..i just put in a mazdatrix short shifter and its way better.

Mine was spinning, moving around while in gear, was able to move it up and down.

replaced the bushings, tightened everything down, added some gear oil and BAM!..now it feels like new.

Now i just need a shift **** lol..i bought it without one.

It sounds like The Pivot pin in the Trans is what is "missing".
The Shifter shaft has a slot that sits on a pin,.and it allows the shifter to stay within it's Gear parameters( the H and 5 and reverse).IF that PIN is missing the Shifter shaft will spin.It will still allow you to shift but it will be annoying as hell.
Pop the shifter out,(3 10 mm bolts, and then Pull the shifter Straight UP).If you do not see a PIN then you have to get another one,It is a Roll pin.you just shove it in the hole(located towards the Front of the hole.FEEL for it).
I would also LOOK for the OLD pin.
another thing would be Changing the Bushings while you are there.
