In search of history on an (uncommon?) steering wheel

Hey folks, not much of a backstory here, not a longtime forum lurker or rx7 owner. I am however a Mazda enthusiast in search of some history!

I've got a somewhat tough nut to crack. It started when I was searching for a new stock replacement airbag for my '97 Miata. When I came across this! https://www.ilmotorsport.de/en/mx-5-...ck-stitch-5961

Some of you might recognize this wheel right off the bat, but I had a hard time figuring it out. From my understanding Mazda used this momo steering wheel with a momo branded airbag for a short stint in their EU (UK only?) models of the MX-5. That led me down a rabbit hole of figuring out how to get one here in the states. IL motorsport claims to sell factory new airbags in this style. They were in stock a couple months ago when I placed an order that was quickly cancelled because they can't ship it to the US. https://www.ilmotorsport.de/en/mx-5-...l-leather-3412

Eventually I found plenty of Ebay listings for this steering wheel under various names. Some claiming it's a Mazdaspeed part, others saying it's a JDM spec part, but the common phrasing in all listings is FD3S, so here I am.

Can anyone provide some history on where and when this version was used in the US market? I've seen some pictures floating around of this wheel in FD's so someone's got to know. I would really appreciate it! Model years with trim spec, or even part numbers would be huge!
