S5 Thermoswitch Advice
S5 Thermoswitch Advice
I picked up a S5 Thermoswitch to lower my cooling fan temps. It is a major PITA to get at. Does anyone have any advice for getting the old one out and the new one in? Or do I just have to remove it all? TIA!
IIRC, disconnect the battery, remove the cross-over pipe, pressure tank, loosen the alternator belt and remove the alternator. For me, the latter was the biggest pain. It helps to have a dead-blow hammer as the 'ears' of the alternator can need a little persuasion. Drain a little out of the radiator until you certain the coolant level is lower than the sensor. 19mm IIRC, you can check against your new switch. Either a thin-walled deep socket or maybe a rachet-wrench would work. I don't recall it being THAT hard, just close quarters.

Thanks! I was hoping I wouldn't have to yank the alternator but I'll just have to dive in. Should have done this when I did the vacuum hoses. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.
