S5 9.7:1 Rotor Milling
I have an engine failure and need to replace at least one of the rotors. I found two for a good deal and bought them. Both are in very good condition and I'm pretty sure they came out of the same engine. They're both C weight.
My question is why does one have the face completely mill and one only the combustion pocket? Funny thing is that the engine that failed has the same setup, one has the face completely mill and the other only the combustion pocket. I don't think it will make any difference but I'm curious if anyone can tell me why they are different?
Here's a picture of the ones I got from eBay:

oh its simple, the bit wore out. they machine the whole thing, but as time progresses they seem to go longer between changing machining bits. so just generally every rotor installed in production was pretty smooth, but if you buy new ones, you have about a 20% chance of getting one that is rougher than the other.
the Japanese have a place they buy from that matches parts by manufacture date, so a high power engine would get two rotors from the same batch. in the US we just do whatever

I did find a 13B-REW post that talks about this too: 13B-REW Rebuild Inspections
Another site said that the Mazda factory assembles the ruff rotor in the rear housing: S5 rx7 rotor orientation.. determining F&R. Can anyone verify this? I did find the ruff one in the rear housing in my old motor... Probably won't make any difference but I think I'll assemble my motor that way just in case, since I'm not planning to balance it.
You'd also think that the ruff rotor would have more carbon deposits on it but it looked even on the used set I bought and on the rotors I took out of my engine.

its been my experience that we didn't start seeing these rough finished rotors until the early 2000's, so i can't really say ive ever seen one come out of a factory build at all.
the engines that Mazda USA built don't really count as they weren't built to any real standard, although they used a lot of new parts
