S4 turbo or S5 turbo?

First off I would like to say hello to all of you. I am new here and would like to maybe make a good impression by hopefully not reposting something.

But anyways heres the deal.

I am looking to make a turbo swap. I have been looking around and seen that it is not a good LONG TERM idea to just boost a stock NA motor. So a full on swap it is...now I know there are two types of 13b turbos out and they are the S4 turbos and the S5 turbos.

I am not for sure about ALL the differences between them but that you can take the air pump off the S4 no problem but not the S5. The back pressure pick up tube and all. I have heard about EGR valve block off plates and such but not for sure how they would work with what I want or how to really work with them anyways. But emissions are not a problem and I am willing to do some more work if need be.

I also want the MAX hp out of the car without going TO overboard on the mods. I would also like to have the HP when I want it and still keep it a bit of a daily driver.

So what I am asking is...I should go for S4 turbo motor and just block of the air control check valve and such or go with an S5 and roll with that?

Match the series turbo engine to the car it's going into. Mixing wiring and electronics creates complications. There's no reason you need to keep the airpump on an S4; that's just for NA 6-port engines. The S5 turbocharger itself is better, which why a lot people use them on their S4 blocks. Lastly, EGRs are useless on rotary engines. S5s don't even have them.

I have an S4 NA in there now. So going with an S4 turbo would work? I was thinking that would be ok to do and since I could take off EGRs it would be the way to go...is this a good way to go then?

The model I have is a 1987 GXL N/A.

When using the stock electronics, sticking to the same series is the easiest way. So go with S4 stuff. Don't know what the EGR has to do with it though...

This sounds good to me. I dont know if they even have anything to do with it. I have not messed with them at all and alls I know is you can take them off for more HP and I would like to get max HP out of it while at a good street race/daily driver level.

EGR will have no effect on power. Mazda has alternately used and eliminated EGR. S4 North American cars have it, but S4 J-spec cars do not. Then it was eliminated across the board in S5 and I think brought back for the FD.

So taking them out is just a way to simplify the engine not motor ? But for what I am going for I dont need to even worry about them. I only want the tiny step over basic with this. I want to beat a few hondas around the hood

I found a few S5 motor's on ebay and I was thinking of getting it that way. I am a bit worried though..I wont really know if its bad or close to being bad. I also dont know if that is a fair price. They say it has uncut harness and ECU along with the engine and tranny....turbo manifold and booster as well for about a grand. plus shipping.

I dont really know the miles on them though...

Contact Japan2LA. He is a club vendor that imports engines to CA. Also, read the thread in my sig. A J-spec harness and ECU will be useless to you.
