the simple answer is it depends on what the damage is. the big things you need to look for with side housings, in general, are step wear and/or gouges. i've seen some people condemn them based on discoloration, presumably from big heat, but i have never seen one with those kinds of marks that was not usable.
now, for these housings ('86-'92) you also have to look for the integrity of the water jacket. the water seal borders can crack and break off making the housing useless.

when it's real bad, not only will you actually see the seal tracks, you'll be able to catch a fingernail in them, too. outside of that you'd have to refer to FSM and/or Haynes for specs and inspection techniques.

if they are bad enough to catch a nail, then they're probably junk. take what you can off them (if you'd like) and toss them, or again, if you'd like, keep them for practice or self-teaching tools.
if they're not too bad, i suppose you could try lapping. i've never had it done, but understand there are limits.
