Wanting to remove the side moldings from my 86. Does any body have any tips or experience. Also if any one has before and after pics.

Thanks

They are held on by double-sided automotive adhesive tape. Really nasty stuff. I would get under the edge of one of the moldings and use a "fan" nozzle for a heat gun to weaken the adhesive while slowly working a metal putty knife behind it. Be careful of the paint around the molding... do not get it too hot. You can use adhesive remover to clean up the residue after you spend hours peeling away the bulk.

Haha on my first RX7 I had to remove all my side mouldings and re-glue them back on. It was not fun getting all the excess glue off, like the guy said above me, be careful. You can easily chip/scratch the paint.

I was told by a body shop that "silicone spray" will help greatly when removing the moldings. I don't actually know what "silicone spray" is though.

"Goo Gone" works well also. Carefully pry back the top of the moulding and spray liberally into the area behind the moulding.

I think the S5 side moldings look good because they arent rubber like the S4's and I'm pretty dumb for not thinking of Goo Gone at the time, lol.

Yes. I don't like the look of them in general. I would take the moldings off the bumpers too if I could.

Trim paint is about $5 a can at any automotive store. It would look a lot better to just repaint the trim then leave them off, still having the bumper trim visible. If the side moldings are removed with the bumper moldings still in place, the car looks broken.

I agree with Aaron! Paint them, either black again or the color of the body. I think I may do that...

I might do that. I dont know if the car is Sunrise red or True red. Not color blind but I have no reference.

Check the VIN plate, it should reveal what color it is.
