I know what this usually means in a solid axle 1stgen, but I have to defer to the 2ndgen IRS crowd on this one...thread approved.

Sounds like a broken front diff mount. Jack the car up, and take a look.

Yeah, this is almost always the front diff mount. If you are luck, the rubber part is broken and you just need to replace the mount. If you are unlucky (had to fix one of these last year) then it is the actual subframe flange that has snapped off. In that case the whole subframe needs to come down and it needs to be welded up.

A broken front diff mount is easy to diagnose. Just pry the nose of the diff up with a bar. If it moves more then 1CM, the mount is broken.

I have something to that effect with my GSL-SE. My transmission case is cracked but the car still drives. The u joints are bad too so I rebuilt a gsl tranny and put my new driveshaft in...my car rumbles and doesn't accelerate safely past 20 mph. Is it the ring and pinion or a difference in the splines on the driveshaft? It is on a lift so any changes can be made.

is tranny lined up correctly in my experience when one is cracked its due to it not being lined up correct with motor and drive line so something may be out of whack

Hmm, how would I know that? isn't it difficult to install it out of line? at any rate, I haven't turned the car on until I figure out if the ring and pinion are bad. I'll check the alignment of the engine and tranny by comparing spaces with the manual. Is there any specific way that is easier?
