Rats Nest?

I'm trying to figure out what it is & does? I've seen a couple FC & FD without the rats nest & those owners believe its helped. While I hear otherwise.

That's just a generic term for the vacuum rack/emissions equipment on an engine. I don't know what you hope to "help" by removing those systems, but the only purpose is clean up the engine bay if the car does not need to be smog tested. Many novices just start taking things off the engine without knowing what anything does, and that leads to problems.

Yeah I'm just making sure what its purpose serves. To get the rats nest reinstalled into a vehicle is it expensive & difficult to do yourself?

even though you are in Cali and will need all of the emission, keep an eye on the silicone hoses and if they haven't been replaced try replacing them, search for a wiring diagram and you will find the layout. Over time the hoses become very hard and brittle and break causing vacuum and other issues.

I thought the purpose to removing the rats nest is also remove some of the additional controls and problem points on the engine. Isn't the car more responsive without all the emissions stuff?

I haven't removed it from my '81 yet, but I've been considering it when I do the full exhaust shortly.

The only emissions component you can remove to improve performance is the cat.
