Well, what kind of fluid is it? Coolant? Oil? Sometimes oil can be used for long term storage, or it could mean the oil control rings failed before the engine was pulled. Coolant would mean failed seals and rusted housings/irons/rotors.

Coolant o-rings have failed. This could be from a few reasons:

1. Corrosion in the coolant passages
2. Warped rotor housings from overheating

Either way, it's a rebuild. The main difference will be what engine parts need to be replaced during the rebuild. You won't know that until the engine is disassembled.

Before you fall too deeply into despair, read this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/1st-gen-archive-71/engine-coolant-seal-repair-maybe-750774/

14,000 miles and two years later, still going strong.

If the engine has been sitting with coolant in the chambers, it has most likely rusted to the point of being useless. The irons and rotors will not be happy to sit in a pool of coolant. Inspect it through the exhaust ports with a light, see if it turns over by hand, and test compression.

the rebuild doesn't take long at all. it's the tear down, checking to see what parts will need replacing, and the cleaning and prep work needed that's time consuming. hard to give an actual time period cause if ur doing it urself, it'll depend on just how much time u will have to spend working on it between ur job and other things like can throw at u. but i'd say a week or two at least. then u have to take into consideration problems u may run into during the process like waiting on parts to arrive or broken bolts, etc. not to mention if u want to get any porting done.
