MB Question

Hello I am interested in buying a 93' Rx-7. After I am planning on tuning it. This will be my first project so it will be a learning experience as I go. My first question is what kind of engines does the 93' come with? Which one is ideal for tunning? I'd like my rx7 to be an everyday driver roughly with 500-600hp running a single turbo, if that helps answer my question. When it comes to tuning, where should I start? Any help is greatly appriciated. Thank you.

500-600hp and daily driver are not going to happen. 400hp is about as high any daily driven FD. With 50/50 meth/water injection and a big single turbo, maybe 500hp. Big HP numbers are not going to happen like a Supra or Vette.

For tuning always start with maintenance and reliability mods. Then you'll have to build up the fuel system as you go since detonation is death. Making big hp on these cars is not cheap.

There is much more detail in the 3rd Gen FAQ. Linked at the top of this forum.

Realistically, you will never make 500 (nor 400) HP on an FD as you first tuning project. It's just not going to happen. Start with a far more basic project like simply making the FD reliable in the first place to get some knowledge under your belt before you blow $20K on parts and then blow the engine shortly later.

If money is not an issue pay a shop to put it in for you. An LS1 should do it.

Money is not an issue? OK, then here's a parts list for a 500+ HP FD. These are US prices.

-full rebuild, bridgeport, all new seals, dowels, oiling mods, cooling mods, new housings: $5000
-GT42R turbo: $3000
-Custom manifold to mount GT42: $1000 - $2000, depending on fabricator
-Full exhaust: $1500
-Standalone to run it: $1500 - $2500 for an entry level system
-Fuel pump, 4 x 1600 CC injectors: $900
-Intercooler and piping: $1000 - $1500
-Radiator: $600 - $1000
-Clutch: $600
-Hoses, fittings: $2000
-Tuning: $2000- $3000

If that seems reasonable to you, then I can get into specifics.

If you have never tuned a car like this before, you will go through three engines to make it work. So it's probably best to send it to a shop. In that case, labour is going to add $5-$7K to that price tag. And make sure it is a rotary shop because otherwise it will be butchered.

FWIW, a 500HP RX-7 is undrivable at WOT on the street. Set up two boost settings, low and high. Low should be around 400 wheel HP (which is also terrifying) and high can be the 500HP setting. This is how I have my car set up.

Good boost controllers (electronic controllers with closed loop control) will allow you to set two or three boost levels, and then a "scramble" boost. Generally a low and high boost are used, then the scramble (a time based 3rd setting) is a "really high" boost.

There's a whole bunch of pictures of my engine bay in this thread:
