Putting an S4 engine in an S5 vert?

I know that this has been covered somewhere on this board? I'm thinking about putting an S-$ from an 88 GXL into a 91 vert??

I have an idea that it likely entails a lot of changeover:

ECU
Wiring harness
Dashboard Harness
Body Wiring Harness

Have I left anything out? Any suggestions?

Thansk, PJ

The vert body, dash and engine harness is completely different than a coupe.

Trying to put a S4 engine into a S5 vert, you would be better off taking all the S5 stuff including the front cover, MOP, intake, engine harness from the S5 engine and putting it onto the S4 motor.

You would not be able to use the front, body, rear harnesses from a coupe into a vert and still have the top work among other things.

Agreed. Use ONLY the keg. Don't mess with trying to swap/modify every harness in the car.

If you only swap the short block (minus the front cover).

Switching engines- S4 into an S5 Vert

Hi, Thanks for the replies! I kind of figured that it would be a difficult switch-over. I'm considering changinging out all of the S-5 engine essentials as IceMark mentioned intake, MOP, etc onto the S-4 Engine. Or I might just search around to find a decent S-5 short block,,,which would be the easier solution. Thanks, PJ

Switching engines- S4 into an S5 Vert

Hi again,

Boy this site is so full of great information that it boggles the mind!! Can anyone direct me to the proper section on how to actually remove and engine and then install an engine step by step . I know that there are probably links to this info, but finding them is another story! Thanks, PJ

No, it'll be ok running on the stock ECU. The added compression won't be enough to hurt anything.

I don't think there's a step-by-step thread on engine removal, but I'll give you the run-down off the top of my head.

1) Remove fan, fan shroud, radiator, battery, air box & air duct.
2) Disconnect EM harness at the ECU & pull through the firewall into engine bay.
3) Disconnect alternator wiring & all other wiring on driverside
4) Disconnect oil cooler lines (2) and power steering lines (2).
5) Unbolt A/C pump & zip-tie it to the side. (note that you can't remove the bolts because they hit the frame rail. Just back them off until the pump is loose)
6) Disconnect throttle cable and cruise control cable.
7) Remove nuts from engine mounts (from underneath) & remove all six? bolts from the transmission bell housing (note that this requires removal of the starter).
8) Place a board under the bell housing & attach a cherry picker to the engine lift points.
9) Raise it up enough for the mounts to clear the frame, then pull it forward and off of the transmission. Up and out. Done.

I think that about covers it.
