pressure in cooling system only when cranking or cold
Hi everyone. I'm not necessarily a newbie and have built this car multiple times now and this issue has me a bit puzzeled...
The car:93 FD RHD single t51r full Bridgeport simplified to the most. All water outlets to heater and everything else except the radiator blocked off correctly. Fresh radiator, thermostat, hoses, water pump etc.
The issue: I am aware being that the engine was just built this could be the worst and the water seals be leaking compression but I'd like to see what advice I could get here before having to remove the engine after it just being installed weeks ago and not even getting 500 miles on it. When cranking cold and running up to temps over 150 there's a lot of pressure being built up in the system. If I attempt to remove the upper cap on the water outlet it will push spew coolant but if the radiator cap is removed the air will bypass and the coolant level drops and I can top it off on the outlet and once warm all is well. The thermostat is drilled to prevent air pockets and everything in the system is new. Twin fans insure the temps don't go to high and the car will not overheat. It doesn't appear to be burning it and has no leaks in the system. The odd part is it seems the radiator level drops a considerable amount when left sitting over night as of air is in the system. When started it'll build pressure causing my worrying now...it just seems very odd to me that the coolant is disappearing with no leaks and no smoke out of the ordinary from the exhaust. I can warm the car up with the funnel over the outlet and top it off and cap it and drive her hard average or just cruise and have no more pressure issues after. My question is should I remove the engine and break it open again or continue to break in and hope she seals up? Or possibly is there air being trapped somehow someway I don't know about? I'm a very strong mechanic and know the in and outs of this system but this is quite a strange problem in my book...any help, advice or words of wisdom her would be greatly appreciated. I really would like to not have to pull the engine for the third time in 6 months but I'm beginning to think that's my main option...
