Question Possible quick diagnosis before I buy this FC...

Well lets start from the beginning. I've always wanted a RX and recently i've seen a 91 FC NA for sale for $2500, but supposedly it doesn't run. So not wanting to spend that much I pass it up. Well a few months have gone by and now the guy just wants $1500 for it. Seems like a pretty good price even if there is a problem because the exterior and the interior are pretty much flawless. So after a brief discussion with the seller over the phone, what i get is this: He says it needs a main fuse, and supposedly an air pump? He says the car starts but then turns off almost immediately. Could that be an "air pump"? Or maybe an IAC, TPS, or MAF etc? Any ideas would be great because I go look at it Wednesday evening.

Brief stats:
Fresh black paint job
Immaculate interior
120k-ish miles
5 spd
Very very little modifications (MOMO steering wheel and gangsta chrome door trim LOL)

No, not an air pump or a main fuse.

But there could be MANY causes from everything from a vacuum leak, to a bad injector, to a blown engine.

Another possible problem could be the alternator or a bad battery.

Could be alot of things as AC indicated. Go with a worst-case scenario. Like the engine is blown and will require a rebuild. If all major components can be salvaged (unlikely) and you do the work yourself, or have Kevin Landers (www.rotaryresurrection.com) do it, figure on a minimum of ~$1,500. If major components cannot be reused or to have someone else do the work, the price will go up significantly from there.

If you are looking for a project, go for it. If you're looking for a dependable daily driver, forget it. Just my opinion. Good luck!

Well I am bringing my compression tester and a local RX7 guy with me tomorrow to check it out. If the compression is bad i'll offer him 1k for it just because the car itself is beautiful. Hopefully its just a sensor or something but worse case scenario I was planning to swap in a turbo motor anyway, but then again.... small block Chevy motors are pretty common here in WV lol.

If the exterior and interior is as good as you say then it would be a good shell candidate for a turbo II conversion. If that's the case you should go for it.

Well guys, I went and looked at the car today and spent about 2 hours inspecting it. Interior is near perfect and even comes with a MOMO steering wheel. Exterior is pretty good, fresh paint, just a few little dings etc and needs some weather stripping around the hatch. But the biggest problem is that the guy knew next to nothing and had no idea that one rotor had NO compression. One tested consistently around 95 ish while the other wouldn't even register. But after a little cranking it does run and can move around the drive way but its like a Civic on 1 cylinder lol. So..... needless to say unless he will take a grand for it I doubt I will be getting it.

I wouldn't even offer a grand. I'd start at $300 and go up to $500. Tell him it needs a new engine which costs $3500 at the Mazda dealer. This is true of course, but you can opt to rebuild it yourself, install a used engine or pay a rotary shop to do the work. But a quality rotary shop rebuild/replacement will be around $3500 anyway.
