ports on fc3s
i was talking with someone at work today, he mentioned he used to have a rx7. he said that the 4, 5, and 6th port on my 13b turbo only opened at higer rpms. he also said that there is a way to permanently open them. is this true? is it safe? if so, how is it done?

Someone is very confused.
13B turbo engines are 4 port.
All 13B NA engines since '84 are 6 port. The aux ports (5th and 6th) open after about 3800RPM when the engine is under load. On 84-'88, this is done via exhaust pressure. On '89 to '92, it is done via air pump powered actuators. On the Renesis, it's electronic.
Leaving the aux ports open all the time gains you nothing but will result in a large low end torque loss.
All RX-7s have progressive throttle bodies which open the primary ports before the secondary ports.

thanks guys, this is my first rotary so i am still learning about them. any other tips i might need or can use to get a little more juice out of my fc? i am stationed in germany so i am not going to upgrade the turbo til i get back to the states. tuning the turbo would be difficult considering the shops that do that here are few and far between, not to mention extremely expensive

I didn't even notice you were at an air base in Rammstein....
There is a thread in the 2nd gen archives called "how to make a beefy n/a". That's the first place you should check for basic upgrades.

well its a turbo not n/a. i know a good bit about engines and upgrades. i made money off of installing aftermarket motor, body and interior parts back home. this is my first rotary though and it seems pretty hard to find a decent parts dealer that will ship over here

Top Down, Boost Up

It looks like you've already started with intake/exhaust, which is good, but if your wastegate is stock, you will be getting boost creep. Info on porting the wastegate can be found here: http://fc3spro.com/TECH/HOWTO/ZWG/zwg.html
The same site has a list of other general modifications as well: http://www.fc3spro.com/TECH/MODS/mods.html. The big ones will be fuel, fuel control, turbo, porting, suspension. More information can be found doing searches on those subjects.

If you haven't found the online FSMs, here's a link.

Spend as much time as you can reading through the 2nd gen section, you might be suprised at some of the little things you can pick up.

Sorry, it went completely over my head that it was a turbo engine. The advice given above is the best place to start. Modifying a turbo rotary is a slippery slope. Almost in the beginning, fuel and engine management must be considered if you intend to go past what the stock turbo can provide.

i dont like the exhaust it came with. it is a 3" hks hi-power, and i think it sounds like a lawnmower. i plan on ordering a racing beat rev t2. about the wastegate, i live on an airbase, i would love to port the wastegae but i dont have much access to tools around here, just the basic stuff. would an aftermarket wastegate help? at least until i can port it? i also plan on ordering a FCD and an apexi boost controller soon. thanks for all the info, i really appreciate it.

You can't easily run an aftermarket wastegate with the stock manifold and turbo. Setting one up would be more work then porting the stock wastegate.
If you go with the RevII (which is a great exhaust, by the way) you will need to figure out how to keep the boost down. Porting the wastegate is the best way to do this.
Don't bother with the boost controller. Definitely get the FCD.

well, like i said i dont really have any access to any specialty tools, it would be hard just to get my hands on a decent drill. when you say it cant easily be done, do you mean it would need major mod or just a pain in the ***? i can deal with pain in the *** lol
