port actuators better open closed or 5 open
i have a 86 na and i removed the airpump and have no cat and stock mufflers have 25 1/4 inch holes drilled into the back of them. now with this setup my actuators are dusty and do not appear to be opening correctly. i opened one manually and left it open. it has whats seems less 0-4k but afterwards feel more open than before(more power). is there a special way to wire them. or can i just leave them open all the time. or leave 5 ports open to level out the lower rpms with the top since i cant get them to opne on there own. and if there was anyway i could hook up my airpump to the actuators(wouldnt theybe open 24/7 anyways) i could really use some advice. tired of getting burned by this stock 172 hp jetta. any questions just ask
Opening one is an odd way to go. You'll be better off making the system work like it's supposed to, but if you can't for some reason, wire them both open. An RPM switch, an emissions solenoid & a NPT fitting threaded into the airpump/ACV would make the system work for about $50.
or you could kill two birds with one stone. buy a used racing beat header/presilencer combo off a user in the classified section and you'll get functioning aux ports and the added benefits of a freer flowing exhaust.
so in all respects could i just get a airpump belt, bolt her back up and run the actuators off the pump. then cut my stock mufflers off for free flow mufflers? and rotaryrocket i will put new pics up( whole car has been repainted intake redone painted engine etc.) but is that what u suggest (doing it the air pump way)? thanks guys (adding pics later today car still needs clear coat)
The header and presilencer are each about $250. The presilencer is also too long to be used with the stock precats, so you would have to use the header or their downpipe ($135). So it'd be $350 - $500, and even then there's no guarantee the ports will actuate properly. I'm not a fan of the backpressure method. Go to racingbeat.com. You would pay with a credit card, just like any other website.
The airpump / rpm switch method on the other hand will definitely work, be much cheaper, and allow you to modify the exhaust however you want. I'm going to be making a long-overdue writeup for it soon here, so I'll post up a link.
