15 MPG in the city is about average.

With any mileage drop, the first thing to start with is a full tuneup. Then check all the engine sensors (CLT especially) and have the injectors professionally cleaned.

Would that be the same for an '85 12a carburated?

I noticed I get just about 18-19 mpg in the city. I've only had her a few weeks. (39K on the OD) When I drove her back from from CA I got over 26... (the original specs say 22city 29hwy)

I may have answered my own question... I put a jug of lucas "tune-up" in her on my last fill-up, after about 50 miles I swear the motor sounds a little more "vroom-vroom" with a deeper, more punctuated note to it... I notice those little things in all of my cars... or maybe I'm hallucinating...

Would a racing beat exhaust system, high flow cat & muffler pull a few more miles out of it? I'm to understand it will boost the performance some as well. (But I also know "fast" = "gas" when you get a lead-foot... especially in city driving. )

Well, since you have a carburetor, there are no sensors or injectors to check.

Sounds like the carb may just be a bit gunked up if a can of cleaner helped a little. Might be time for a carb rebuild.

drive it, when you fill up divide distance traveled by gallons of gas used.

and 15 mpg city is above average, I got 13.5 last time I filled up my FD, but I do beat on her quite a bit. My first FD was getting 10s - 11s

On my large street port S4 13B stock ECU I'm getting 13 mpg when breaking her in. After the break in period it jump to 15 mpg. Since i have a worn out LSD, I replaced it with a welded differential and now it's consistent at 20 mpg. I can probably hit 26-29 If I take her on a road trip!

That's around where your highway mileage should be.

OR Mpg

My '84 GSK-SE (fb) gets about 20.5 in town and 27 on highway. I'm a conservative driver: I shift at below 3,000 RPM, do the speed limits, and look far ahead for stop lights. The 6-port GSL-SE engine has got peak torque beginning at 2,700 RPM, so it's made for the kind of driving I do.

I do not run the tires rock hard. I keep them at 36 psi. (they're rated max load at 44psi)

I've heard other folks on other forums talking about taking off the rear spoilers for smoother air flow. The rear spoilers are for down force above 90MPH, and don't really smooth out the airflow at normal freeway speeds. What do you think?

I've also heard other folks on the MPG forums using the Bonneville-style full dish hubcaps for smoother airflow around the wheels/tires.

first off, make sure you give that car a good beating once in a while.
Yes to the removing spoilers for improved mileage.
I don't know about the dish-style hubcaps tho. But if it is smooth/not in the airstreem, odds are, it'll work, but how much I have no idea.
